MANHATTAN LEGAL SERVICES seeks an experienced staff attorney to represent low-income clients in immigration matters in Manhattan. We are part of Legal Services NYC, the largest provider of free civil legal services for low-income people in the country. The Manhattan office is dedicated to providing high quality legal services in the areas of housing, family law, public benefits, employment, consumer, education, immigration and disability rights, with special units serving particular vulnerable populations including domestic violence victims, people with HIV, the elderly and disabled and SRO tenants. We are committed to working in partnership with community-based organizations in the low-income communities we serve to address the causes of poverty.
The staff attorney will work in the Family Law/Domestic Violence and Immigration Unit. The immigration attorney will represent immigrants in removal defense, affirmative and defensive asylum, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), family petitions, consular processing, naturalization, VAWA self-petitions, and petitions for U and T-nonimmigrant status. The immigration attorney will also represent clients in family court in matters involving guardianship (for SIJS cases). The job will also entail coordinating with the LSNYC pro bono team to effectively use pro bono resources to expand capacity.
Responsibilities include providing legal advice and counseling; conducting screening and client interviews; case investigation; preparation of immigration applications; administrative interviews at the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services; and representation of clients in Immigration Court and federal court. The attorney will also work with community groups in outreach and education, some of which may occur on nights and weekends.
Applicants must have a J.D. from an accredited law school, minimum of 3 years’ experience practicing immigration law, excellent advocacy, litigation, analytic, writing and leadership skills. S/he must be able to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, conduct community outreach in low-income neighborhoods and demonstrate a commitment to social justice and working with communities of color and low-income communities to advance equity. Salary is determined by a collective bargaining agreement based on year of graduation.
