Interim or Permanent Position: The National Lawyers Guild of Los Angeles seeks to hire an Interim Executive Director, to start immediately and serve for a period anticipated to be between three to six months. Please note that we are also conducting a search for a permanent Executive Director. Candidates who are available for both positions are encouraged to apply to both, but in addition candidates who are only available short-term should feel welcome to apply for the interim position. There is no expectation that the Interim Executive Director will serve permanently. 

The Interim Executive Director will have the same job as permanent executive director, as listed below; in addition, the Interim ED would be expected to participate in the hiring committee. 

Duties of Executive Director: The Executive Director will be responsible for overseeing the finances of the chapter, and managing staff and volunteers. They will also coordinate many chapter activities and projects. They will report directly to the NLG-LA Executive Board.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Manage chapter finances and report on the financial health of the chapter to the finance committee. Oversee fundraising activities including dues collection and the annual Awards Banquet.
  • Support the work of program committees, including overseeing periodic CLE seminars and public forums.
  • Administer the Legal Observer program, providing for regular trainings and recruiting legal observers to attend progressive actions and document unlawful police activity.
  • Supervise and work with staff and volunteers to prepare for events and oversee membership engagement tasks.
  • Assist leadership and staff with media and communications work, including taking the staff lead on press announcements. This will include drafting press releases and other materials.
  • Facilitate regular communication with and among the membership. Publish relevant information to the web and in email updates.
  • Prepare agendas for and attend monthly Executive Board meetings and report on activities.

Qualifications: Experience as a community organizer or as an executive director on behalf of organizations seeking progressive social, political, or legal change. Knowledge of and commitment to issues related to a progressive political agenda including: support for civil liberties, workers’ rights, and social justice. Good computer skills. Good managerial skills. Good public speaking and writing skills. Conflict mediation skills. Familiarity with restorative justice practices. Demonstrated commitment to increasing diversity and centering impacted communities. Ability to work with people in the legal profession (law degree preferred, but not required).

About the National Lawyers Guild (NLG): NLG is the oldest human rights bar association in the United States. For 83 years the Guild has been at the forefront of the struggle to give human rights precedence over property rights. It defended the unions in the late ‘30’s and ‘40’s and ‘50s and does the same today. It was the nation’s first racially integrated bar association. It was the first bar association to organize the defense of civil rights workers in the south in the 1960’s; the first bar association to condemn the U.S. war in Vietnam and Iraq; and, the only bar association to defend those accused of violating the nation’s anti-Communist laws in the ‘40’s and ‘50’s.

NLG-LA represents progressive movements for social and political change throughout the Los Angeles region. Its membership is comprised of attorneys, law students, legal workers and jail house lawyers. And it has law school chapters in Los Angeles and OC area law schools.
