The Disability Policy Consortium (DPC) is an independent organization run by and for people with disabilities that provides advocacy, community-based research, and healthcare ombudsman services across Massachusetts. More than 80% of our staff have disabilities, and our credo is “About Us, By Us”—the belief that when decisions are being made about people with disabilities, they should play a leading role in making them. We are committed to social justice and strive to be a place where all our employees can bring their full selves to work.

DPC is seeking a full-time Racial Justice Community Organizer to support our advocacy efforts and policy work. This organizer will work on a variety of campaigns, but their focus will be on issues at the intersection of race and disability. This position works within our Advocacy Department and reports to the Director of Advocacy.

Responsibilities include:

  • Working to identify where our existing campaigns intersect with issues of racial justice, collaborating with fellow organizers to ensure our advocacy reflects these intersections
  • Building coalitions with organizations and advocates pursuing racial justice work, including immigrants’ rights advocates
  • Building and leading campaigns to advance the rights of disabled people, and especially disabled People of Color, across Massachusetts
  • Planning events, such as trainings and legislative forums, to advance DPC’s advocacy priorities and/or develop leadership in the disability community
  • Helping to identify major legislative or other advocacy priorities at the intersection of race and disability and leading outreach to disabled People of Color
  • Working in coalition with other disability rights groups as well as other oppressed communities to create systems change
  • Recruiting people with disabilities to speak to legislators, testify before committees, and participate and take leadership in DPC’s advocacy in other ways
  • Educating broader community about important legislation and campaigns
  • Identifying and responding to other relevant legislation and campaigns
  • Testifying to committees (in person and in writing) about legislation
  • Identifying partnership opportunities to allow DPC to support advocacy efforts beyond our main priorities
  • Participating in DPC’s internal anti-racism work

The ideal candidate will have lived experience with disability and/or disability rights and/or anti-racism advocacy. We will prioritize candidates of color. We look for candidates with a deep passion for fighting injustice and creating social change and deep understanding of how disability and anti-racism fit within the broader social justice framework. Leadership potential is necessary, as is a willingness to take risks and be vulnerable. The ability to work independently and to have varied routines as the needs of particular campaigns evolve and change is important.
