·        Community Health Training Institute: An online resource that provides skill building

trainings/webinars, tools, and resources to public health practitioners and advocates to improve community health.

·        Community Health Improvement: A national effort to engage hospitals, health

departments, federally qualified health centers (FQHCs), United Ways, and foundations to conduct comprehensive community health assessments and health improvement plans to prioritize health issues, align collaborative implementation efforts, inform resource allocations, and meet regulatory requirements.

We are searching for a Project Associate to join HRiA’s Policy & Practice team. This is an exciting opportunity to lead efforts around a Tobacco Free Community Capacity Building program, as well as assist with other initiatives at HRiA. This is a full time, exempt position.

Position Description:

On behalf of HRiA, and working with the MA Department of Public Health, the Project Associate leads the day to day work of the Metro Boston Tobacco Free Community Partnership program. The Community Partnership is a population-based initiative focused on community level policy and system changes to reduce tobacco use. The Project Associate will lead communication efforts for the Community Partnership, as well as provide education, training, and resources; promote social norms around tobacco; and support tobacco-related policy efforts. A portion of the Project Associate’s time will also support other HRiA initiatives (e.g. asthma projects, health communication).

Duties and Responsibilities:

•       Coordinate Community Partnership program efforts and outreach related to tobacco issues in Boston and 16 surrounding towns.

•       Engage individuals, community groups, and organizations to promote local tobacco control policies and regulations.

·        Partner with individuals, community organizations, and youth groups on initiatives to raise public awareness about health issuers related to tobacco use.

·        Act as a resource to the media; monitor and generate media stories on local tobacco issues.

·        Conduct presentations and trainings for community members including health services professionals, parents, and local coalitions.

·        Coordinate and develop program reports and workplans; monitor progress of goals and objectives as defined by the program.

•       Serve as a liaison with funders; manage clients, vendors, and consultants (graphic designers, printers, researchers, translators) as appropriate.

•       Write and edit materials including print and web copy for communication products and campaigns.

•       Engage in formative research, including conducting environmental scans and literature reviews, supporting research plan and tool development, providing interview and focus group support, develop and lead up dissemination plans, conduct outreach for programs, and/or contribute to data analysis and report writing.

Candidate Qualifications:


•       Master’s Degree in Public Health or Health Communication with 1-3 years of work experience OR Bachelor Degree of Arts/Science with 2-5 years of experience.

•       A commitment to value diversity of thought, backgrounds, and perspectives.

•       Strong organizational and time management skills, and ability to juggle many projects and tasks at once.

•       Ability to express ideas effectively orally and in writing, including the ability to draft, proof, and construct professional documents and correspondence using contemporary business standards.

•       Keen understanding of public health issues and ability to remain current on issues and health communication practice.

•       Experience with Microsoft Word/Excel/Outlook.

•       Must be able to travel occasionally to offsite meetings.

•       Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.


•       Successful track record in community organizing.

•       Experience working with diverse coalitions and/or local governments.

•       Experience with Adobe In-Design and social media platforms.

•       Ability to work with a wide-variety of personalities.

•       Has thorough knowledge of social marketing.

•       Demonstrated commitment to improving public health.
