The Amazon rainforest is facing a close to irreversible tipping point. Unprecedented deforestation, extraction of natural resources on indigenous lands, and commercial exploitation could lead to staggering losses of one of the planet's most important and vital resources. The Amazon is the world's largest rainforest, absorbing 25% of the earth's total carbon dioxide emission and home to more than 20 million indigenous people and millions of vital animal and plant species.

For more than two decades, Amazon Watch has been protecting the Amazon rainforest and advancing the rights and solutions of indigenous people in the Amazon Basin. Amazon Watch is a woman of color-led organization that works in partnership and solidarity with indigenous communities across the Amazon as part of the international climate justice movement. Through partnerships with indigenous-led and environmental organizations, Amazon Watch boldly and powerfully advocates for a future where indigenous leadership and solutions drive climate policy, creating true and lasting climate justice.

Since summer 2019, Amazon Watch has grown exponentially in its reach and impact. Thanks to outpouring of public and philanthropic support, Amazon Watch is redoubling its efforts to protect and preserve the Amazon and indigenous autonomy. To this end, Amazon Watch seeks a highly motivated, passionate, and focused Director of Philanthropic Partnerships to co-design a plan to fully resource and support Amazon Watch's vision and mission.

The ideal candidate will possesses strong and proven leadership skills, a passion for the solutions that philanthropy can help usher forward, dedication to collaboration, commitment to co-creating a fundraising and philanthropic cultures that deeply honors public and private support and recognizes that the time to act is now, and the drive to create systems that will catapult forward philanthropic investment to Amazon Watch.

Essential Functions

  • Build and manage all donor relationships, including an extensive donor pipeline. Increase donor recognition, stewardship and retention, and cultivate relationships with new potential supporters.
  • Oversee all fundraising initiatives, grow fundraising efforts with a solid strategy and execution plan.
  • Manage and personally solicit a group of major gifts donors and coordinate the cultivation of new prospects; develop a strategy around how the organization engages its next level of philanthropic partnerships.
  • Create fundraising strategies to wrap around appropriate events, initiatives, and programmatic work; develop strong communications and recognition of donors and prospects to ensure donors know and understand the powerful impact of their giving.
  • Lead and over time build out Amazon Watch's Division of Fundraising and Development, motivating an enthusiastic and effective team that works in cooperation, but independently.
  • Enroll and engage the Amazon Watch Board of Directors in the organization's Donor Stewardship Program. Equip them to serve as strong ambassadors for the mission.
  • Establish annual goals and objectives, and be accountable for ensuring that set goals and objectives are met.
  • Support executive staff in all aspects of donor stewardship and solicitation; provide training/coaching as needed.
  • Be an exceptional communicator and an articulate, passionate and credible public presence for Amazon Watch and an effective, strong, inspirational and focused leader within the community.
  • Serve as a member of the Amazon Watch Senior Leadership team, leading a culture of philanthropy and fundraising that is in alignment with organization's values and goals and that lifts up donor engagement in mission fulfillment.

Experience / Requirements

  • At least 10 years with a proven track record of fundraising experience gained in relevant positions of increasing responsibility and scope. At least 5 years of direct people leadership with both direct and indirect reports.
  • Demonstrated fundraising success in corporate, foundation, workplace, individual and major gifts along with additional sources of revenue generation.
  • Change Management experience – training team members and others in the organization to think creatively, and manage through times of organizational transition. Proven success in maintaining the “blocking and tackling” of fundraising while exploring new technologies and methods of connection with donors.
  • Experience in linking fundraising efforts to community impact; good knowledge about community impact work, metrics, and grant-making. Focus on sustainable annual revenue growth and capitalizing on the momentum in growth experienced by the organization.
  • At least 7 years experience building, developing, and retaining strong relationships with donors and volunteers, including board members. A collaborative and communicative work-style that translates into strong results with donors as well as internal partners.

Qualifications

  • At least 7 years experience building out major giving programs for organizations with budgets exceeding $5M;
  • Outstanding communication skills: an attentive listener, articulate speaker, and clear and persuasive writer.
  • Excellent strategic, organizational and project management skills. A decisive, “roll-up-the sleeves,” results-oriented individual who can keep seemingly diverse projects moving forward within a consistent strategic framework.
  • Must have the ability to motivate and inspire confidence among staff, colleagues, volunteers and donors. A leader whom people want to follow.
  • A self-motivated, confident and influential style that is coupled with sensitivity and flexibility.
  • A strong leader with high emotional intelligence and professional standards.
