About the Media Literacy & Leadership Institute with Mali

The FIUTS Media Literacy & Leadership Institute (MLLI) with Mali is new 16-week virtual exchange opportunity for 20 competitively selected active and aspiring journalists and media-makers between the ages of 18-35 in Mali. This program will engage a cohort of young media makers to develop their professional journalism skills and knowledge of media across cultures; allow participants to develop and implement strategies for promoting media literacy and fighting disinformation; and create a network of media practitioners and leaders working collaboratively in Mali and United States. The program will include an 8-week training covering topics in in media literacy, journalism, and intercultural leadership and exchange, followed by eight weeks of planning and implementing Community Action Projects to promote media literacy skills and counter disinformation in their own communities.

About the Role

The person in this role will be responsible for coordinating the French language elements of the program. This position can be done remotely, though eligible candidates should be able to periodically be available during business hours in the Pacific time zone for scheduled check-in meetings. This position will be contracted from December 6, 2021 to June 6, 2022. The time commitment will vary from between 2-8 hours each week during the course of the program.

Duties Include:

  • Translating program materials and curriculum into French, including asynchronous assignments, web content, and communication from U.S.-based program staff
  • Communicating directly with French-speaking students about assignments and program logistics to answer questions, and liaise with English-speaking staff when needed
  • Coordinating the scheduling for several contracted translators who will be hired for simultaneous translation of synchronous virtual meetings between February-May (the person in this position will not be expected to provide simultaneous translation)
  • Attending occasional synchronous meetings with staff and participants as needed

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experiences:

  • Fluency in spoken and written French
  • Demonstrated experience with English-to-French written translation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and French
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
  • Flexibility in schedule to fit variable workload
  • Experience working with Canvas or a similar online learning management system
  • Experience with cultural exchange programs and/or experience with West African culture is strongly preferred

The person in this role must be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of the contract.
