Meals on Wheels of Takoma Park/Silver Spring has served homebound residents in our community since 1971. Our success has inspired and informed the launch of other Meals on Wheels programs in the Washington, DC region. In 2024, we prepared and delivered 53,758 meals to 216 homebound neighbors. This growth would not have been possible without our dedicated and talented staff, numbering four full- and five-part-time employees, and 150 active volunteers. As a direct service organization, we are committed to our clients and making the community a better place for all.

Meals on Wheels of Takoma Park/Silver Spring’s mission is to nourish our community. We do this through the preparation and delivery of healthy, delicious meals to our homebound neighbors and other programs that support our community.
JOB SUMMARY
We are seeking our next Executive Director who will elevate our organization to the next level. The Executive Director should model empathic leadership and help build a culture grounded in trust and transparency. The Executive Director is the key management leader of Meals on Wheels of Takoma Park/ Silver Spring. The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the administration, programs, and strategic plan of the organization. Other key duties include fundraising, communications, and community outreach. The position reports directly to the Board of Directors.
KEY RESPONSIBILIES
Board Governance: Works with the board to fulfill the organization's mission.
- Responsible for leading in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by the Board of Directors.
- Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions.
Financial Performance and Viability: Develops resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the organization.
- Responsible for fundraising and developing other revenues necessary to support Meals on Wheels’ mission.
- Responsible for the fiscal integrity of Meals on Wheels, to include submission to the Board of a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization.
- Responsible for fiscal management that anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.
Organization Mission and Strategy: Works with board and staff to ensure that the mission is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning, and community outreach.
- Responsible for implementation of Meals on Wheels’ programs that carry out the organization’s mission.
- Responsible for strategic planning to ensure that Meals on Wheels can successfully fulfill its mission into the future.
- Responsible for the enhancement of Meals on Wheels’ image by being active and visible in the community and by working closely with other professional, civic, and private organizations.
Organization Operations: Oversees and implements appropriate resources to ensure that the operations of the organization are appropriate.
- Responsible for the hiring and retention of competent, qualified staff.
- Responsible effective administration of Meals on Wheels operations.
- Lead the organization in leveraging technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI). Work to integrate AI into operations, fostering a culture of learning and adaptability.
- Responsible for signing all notes, agreements, and other instruments made and entered into and on behalf of the organization.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Transparent and high-integrity leadership.
- Five or more years of senior nonprofit management experience.
- Experience and skill in working with a Board of Directors.
- High-level strategic thinking and planning. Ability to envision and convey the organization’s strategic future to the staff, board, volunteers, and donors.
- Ability to effectively communicate the organization’s mission to donors, volunteers, and the overall community.
- Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff.
- A bachelor’s degree.
- A history of successfully generating new revenue streams and improving financial results.
- Active fundraising experience. Excellent donor relations skills and understanding of the funding community.
- Previous success in establishing relationships with individuals and organizations of influence, including funders, partner agencies, and volunteers.
- Solid organizational abilities, including planning, delegating, program development, and task facilitation.
- Ability to leverage technology, particularly AI, to enhance operations, programs, and mission impact.
- Strong fiscal management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision making, and reporting.
- A commitment and sensitivity to diversity and equal opportunity for all, and the ability to manage staff across multiple generations and differences.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Strong public speaking ability.
- Strong work ethic with a high degree of energy.
HOURS, COMPENSATION, AND BENEFITS
The ED regularly works 40 hours/week, with evening and weekend activities possible. The position is primarily onsite with telework options available. Compensation includes health insurance (medical, dental, and vision). Benefits include paid vacation starting at 3 weeks/year; 10 days paid sick leave; 5 days paid dependent leave; and other benefits as described in the Staff Handbook. The starting salary range is 100K-110K with the exact amount to be determined by the Board of Directors. Exact compensation offered will be determined by the applicant’s skills and experience.
