About Project 8p Foundation

Project 8p Foundation is a nonprofit organization established in late 2018. We are researching 8p disorders to find treatment options and give meaningful answers to those affected and their families. Currently, there is no cure for 8p disorders, nor is there a standard course of treatment. We are patient-led. Project 8p’s organizational philosophy is built around a strong ethos of stakeholders that are patient-centered for collaboration, transparency, and resource sharing to fulfill the mission. Project 8p is committed to maximizing every opportunity and aspire towards scalability across other rare and broader neurological diseases and to develop programs of excellence.

The Role

The Development Manager will proactively work to support the mission to empower a unified community for chromosome 8p heroes for a meaningful life today while accelerating treatments for tomorrow. Reporting directly to the CEO, this position will have both internal and external facing responsibilities, ranging from fundraising development to client and project management. This includes, but is not limited to, business development, framing of key approaches, high-quality client delivery, and written products. You will partner closely with the CEO to chart Project 8p’s future growth and strategic response to opportunities. Your success will be measured by your ability to grow the Fundraising program towards $3.0 M by YE 2023 as well as actively participating in the achievement of the strategic and operating plans of 8p.

Job Responsibilities:

In addition to the onboarding materials provided you will be expected to take personal initiative to understand chromosome 8p disorders at a layperson’s level, as well as the current strategic and operating plan of the organization. 

Growing the Fundraising program to $3.0 M by YE 2023

Development/Fundraising

Planning

  • Create and execute fundraising campaigns and events with metrics and communications plan to engage all donor segments including corporations
  • Create annual Development plan and manage this budget
  • Provide sound expertise in leadership giving programs, major gifts and grants, Board development, strategic planning, events, and integrated marketing
  • Represent Project 8p in industry-group conferences, professional associations, and other public venues to identify alliances, ideas, competition, etc.

Donor Research

  • Manage and conduct ongoing research of current and new prospects of individuals, major donors, foundations, and corporate donors 
  • This involves searching public records, utilizing donor research tools, preparing profiles etc.
  • Lead internal processes to identify new donors to the organization through current and newly established networks
  • Reach out personally to leaders in targeted networks and with current donors and others as a team to assist in identification and development of new donors

Relationship with 8p Families and Related Constituents

  • Create and manage peer-to-peer fundraising initiatives
  • Establish resources for 8p families with practical and creative ways for them to utilize such platforms with their personal and extended networks

Donor Cultivation and Solicitation

  • Work directly with the CEO and Board members to help cultivate a targeted and assigned portfolio of donors and prospective donors
  • Build robust network of influencers and prospective funders/grantors 
  • Conduct regular face-to-face and/or phone and online communication with such donors 
  • Help create Board and volunteer portfolios by assisting with management and scheduling of their personal interactions with such donors; including formal cultivation and solicitation calls with assigned donors and other members of the board and team
  • Track and manage actions needed from each Board member and appropriate volunteers in their personal management of assigned portfolios—Supply them with all needed materials and instructions to be effective 
  • Prepare individual proposals for gifts at $10K and above

Tracking, reporting and database management

  • Maintain the Prospect Management Report weekly to tracks all actions with prospective and current donors 
  • Evaluate and report to the Board on fundraising and grant impact and program effectiveness
  • Maintain the donor database via Network For Good 

Proposal and Grant Writing

  • Identify eligible grant opportunities and help CEO facilitate and manage timelines with 8p investigators, medical grant writers, 
  • Maintain a foundation grant application deadline calendar
  • Write draft applications for foundation grants 
  • Prepare letters of inquiry (LOIs) and formal proposals as assigned by the CEO for those identified as prospects

Active Participation in the Strategic and Operating plan

  • Support Board of Directors and meetings by creating action plans, ensuring day-to-day operations are aligned with goals and objectives established and approved by board 
  • Help CEO establish and track KPIs associated with Strategic Objectives
  • Implement, socialize and manage Project Management Tool (Asana) to scale and measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the Board, funders, and other constituents
  • Provide weekly progress report on all operations to CEO
  • Sourcing, selection, engagement and management of vendors 
  • Support the Patient Leadership Board and its activities not limited to growing, training, and organizing the volunteer base
  • Manage and assess 8p programs and community engagement including the patient registry 
  • Deepen and refine all aspects of communications from web presence to external relations in order to create a stronger brand
  • Help review and maintain website copy fresh to attract stakeholders and engage community

Project Development, Management, and Client Relations/Management

  • Create and maintain strong internal and external relationships; exceptional relationship builder
  • Active on social media such as biweekly postings and leveraging networks on LinkedIn
  • Assist the CEO to prepare for meetings of the Board and Medical & Scientific Advisory Board, and preparation and distribution of materials for monthly Development Committee meetings
  • Assist the CEO and wider team with administration of annual or other research conferences such as location, food, logistics, mailings etc.
  • Attend all Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI/RAO) seminars and other relevant workshops and webinars assigned by the CEO

Professional Experience:

  • 3 to 5 years of fundraising experience with direct responsibility for any and/or all of the following tasks: donor research, grant/proposal writing, event management, cultivation & solicitation of major gifts
  • Demonstrated leadership in project management from conception to implementation with risk assessment
  • Track record of initiating “first approach” or solicitation calls to new foundations, corporations and/or individual donors
  • Proven success cultivating and advancing relationships with existing donors
  • Familiarity with budget preparation, financial analysis decision-making and reporting

Skills:

  • Self-starter with a proven ability to work independently with minimal oversight while also being a collaborative teammate 
  • Strong work ethic with an understanding of grassroots organizations
  • Takes initiative in bringing new out of the box ideas for finding and cultivating new donors
  • Willingness to make cold calls and form relationships by phone, Zoom and other tools
  • Superior interpersonal skills including interfacing and engaging diverse volunteer and donor groups as well as collaborating with and motivating board members and other volunteers 
  • Strong project management and organizational skills including planning, program development and task facilitation
  • Transparent and high integrity work style; takes personal responsibility and accountability for work and meets deadlines

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Highly motivated to work independently and making an impact for a new disease-specific patient-centric foundation
  • Collaborative approach, with a strong ability to project manage and get things done (individually and through others) in an expeditious manner
  • Excellent and persuasive written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work in a hybrid model with the expectation to be onsite in NYC 2 days per week
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and project management software
  • Creativity and personal dynamism
