Haverford College seeks to hire a full-time, non-exempt, fixed term (two year term), benefit eligible Digital Arts and Sculpture Technician position in Fine Arts. The position will work in sculpture and printmaking, providing curricula and studio support. We are especially interested in candidates who have experience in developing programming and technical skills for diverse and inclusive student and community groups. The position is scheduled to begin May 20, 2021.
Essential Functions & Primary Responsibilities: The technician should have a solid knowledge of both wood/metal working and digital fabricating technologies in sculpture with some printmaking digital technologies preferred. The two main responsibilities of this position are to offer experience in digital technologies across sculpture and printmaking, and to manage, operate, and maintain the sculpture studio facility and the equipment within the space. The technician will make safety a top priority and implement and maintain standardized safety practices and procedures. With ample opportunities for professional development and funding to host visitors and workshops, we are looking for a self-starter who recognizes and sees what needs to be done, a committed candidate who will take ownership and responsibility of the studio spaces, and someone interested in learning new digital technologies and skills. Over the summer months there will be opportunities to collaborate with the Maker Arts Space Coordinator and Technician on community programming.
Required Experience
At least one year of experience in sculpture spaces with wood/metal working and capacity with some digital technologies is required. A degree in a related field is preferred. Ability to maintain shop equipment and keep space clean and safe.
Preferred Experience
We look to a candidate with some of the following software skills and/or a demonstrated ability to learn new technologies: operate and maintain CNC plasma cutters, laser cutters, and CNC routers. Digital 3D modeling software, digital fabricating experiences. The candidate should also know Illustrator and Photoshop (or software of equivalence). Light printmaking digital technologies preferred but not required.
Line of Report: Position will report directly to the Department Chair of Fine Arts with a dotted line of reporting to the Director of the Visual Culture Arts and Media Program. Technician will supervise work study students. Position will also coordinate with Maker Arts Technician (VCAM) and IITS staffing but not in a reporting capacity.
