The Opportunity. 

The Horticulture Assistant reports to the Horticulturist of the Allen C. Haskell Public Gardens. This is a part time seasonal, non-exempt position expected to begin in April and end in November, and is located in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The Horticulture Assistant’s responsibilities can be categorized into the following areas: 

 

In This Role You Will: 

  • Perform routine garden maintenance, including but not limited to: weeding, staking, pruning, mulching, raking, edging trails, and planting.  
  • Assist the Horticulturist with plant classification and cataloging as well as documenting historical aspects of the gardens.  
  • Trail maintenance. 
  • Assist with nursery product production. 
  • Assist with supplemental watering during dry season. 
  • Ensure that all equipment is in good working order through preventative maintenance. 
  • Maintain good and productive relationships with our neighbors, visitors, town officials, businesses, and Trustees staff from other divisions and regions. 
  • Work both independently and as part of a team. 
  • Ensure the safety of the visiting public. 
  • Meet visitors at properties with confidence, charm, and tact. 
  • Work both independently and as part of a team. 
  • Assist with projects on other Trustees properties as required. 
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Horticulturist. 
  • Assist at various events that are held for the public, helping with parking, setting up and breaking down chairs and tables, and other similar tasks. 
  • Assist with teaching the public at horticulture workshops 
  • Work with the Horticulturist to identify meaningful volunteer and internship projects 
  • Provide oversight and recognition of volunteer and intern efforts in the field. 
  • Assist the Horticulturist with administrative tasks and planning.   
  • Other duties as assigned with or without accommodation.

Level of Language Proficiency

Education and Experience:         

  • 1-3 years experience in horticulture, or a related field.

 

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Excellent leadership skills that contribute to the personal and professional development of staff members.
  • The ability to work independently and unsupervised as well as work cooperatively and demonstrate leadership in groups.
  • Sound computer skills (MS Office).
  • Significant experience using hand and power tools.
  • The ability to repair and maintain equipment.

 

Other:

  • Able to handle the physical demands of the job, which will include routinely lifting 50 pounds and working in all weather conditions.
  • Able to work some nights and weekends to prepare for special events or to ensure the safety of the visiting public as needed.
  • A valid driver’s license, as well as a satisfactory driving record as outlined in The Trustees’ driving policy.
  • A satisfactory criminal background check (CORI).
  • Pesticide license encouraged

 

Organizational Relationships/Scope:

Reports to the Horticulturist at Allen C. Haskell Gardens. Has no direct reports.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Works outdoors during summer season, exposed to direct sunlight and occasional rain.
  •  16 hours a week for 31 weeks starting April. 16 hours can be split into half days. 


Education and Experience:
