About the STAR Program:

Sustaining Technical and Analytic Resources (STAR) is a project of the Public Health Institute (PHI) supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) Global Health (GH) Bureau. Its purpose is twofold: (1) Through individual fellowships, STAR will help strengthen the capacity of diverse American and low-and-middle-income country (LMIC) health professionals at all levels to make innovative contributions to global health (GH); and (2) STAR will create ground-breaking opportunities for both US and LMIC GH academic institutions and other groups, including professional associations, to create systems for open-access knowledge sharing, resulting in effective partnerships. STAR’s individual and institutional participants are contributing to the development of self-sustaining systems and tools that will produce global citizens with the full spectrum of relevant health competencies. The Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) is a partner on the STAR project contributing to the creation of open-access knowledge sharing systems and tools for US and LMIC-based academic institutions.

Position Description:

The Academic Partnerships Assistant/CUGH Program Assistant supports CUGH’s activities funded by the Public Health Institute’s (PHI) Sustaining Technical and Analytic Resources (STAR) project.  


Project management

  • With support from CUGH leadership, communicates the organization’s role on the STAR project across CUGH’s network; Incentivizes, galvanizes and organizes CUGH’s membership towards the successful completion of all STAR/CUGH workplan tasks and deliverables
  • Facilitates and supports CUGH’s network’s timely contributions to STAR project workplan tasks and deliverables; Liaises with CUGH leadership towards these efforts as needed
  • Submits all of CUGH’s network-generated resources and material to CUGH leadership for review/refining before submitting to STAR project teams to ensure technical accuracy and appropriate messaging
  • Creates and manages a tracking system to monetize CUGH membership’s hourly contributions to STAR project’s tasks and deliverables towards cost-share reporting
  • Develops CUGH’s annual report inputs, and manages all ad hoc reports requested by USAID, PHI or the STAR project
  • Participates in CUGH committees, subcommittees, working groups related to STAR activities
  • Works closely with the CUGH Administrative Assistant to develop and manage STAR-related web content across CUGH’s virtual platforms and social media, including but not limited to: repurposing/posting announcements, news, job descriptions, and participant-generated content 
  • Develops all CUGH-focused communications materials as needed
  • Supports STAR project outreach and informational interview efforts as needed
  • Led by CUGH leadership, contributes to STAR/CUGH work planning efforts
  • Other duties as assigned

Project Learning Coordination

  • Supports participant learning goals by mapping and sharing available global health learning courses and resources across CUGH’s network 
  • Supports the identification and pairing of STAR participants with mentors from CUGH’s network


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, including a minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible operational and administrative experience
  • At least two (2) years of project management experience required. Preferred candidates will have experience with a USG agency and/or USAID in health, education, international development or a related field
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, flexibility, resourcefulness, and creative problem-solving skills
  • Strong attention to detail and demonstrated ability to meet deadlines
  • Strong ability to balance appropriately between independent action and referring issues to supervisors
  • Exceptional verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills in English
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team
  • Ability to work independently as well as with all levels of management and staff
  • Experience with website design and maintenance (Drupal, WordPress or SharePoint)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Docs required. Preferred candidates will have experience with the Adobe Acrobat design suite, including InDesign and Photoshop, or similar software
  • Background in public health strongly desired
  • Knowledge of USAID, especially in global health preferred
  • US citizenship or US permanent residency required
