VOICE Charter School (http://www.voicecharterschool.org/) is an elementary and middle school located in Long Island City, Queens that serves about 650 students across grades K-8. We are located just minutes from Manhattan (two stops outside of Manhattan on the F, N, and W train lines) and Long Island City’s growing waterfront district, thriving arts community, and rapid residential growth. Position Responsibilities:

The Behavioral Specialist promotes a healthy and positive Elementary School culture by implementing VOICE’s approach to behavior management and discipline on a daily basis, exercising proactive strategies to support a strong student culture, supporting and developing VOICE staff around student culture, and establishing partnerships with families in order to best serve the development of VOICE students. S/he is responsible for addressing student behavior concerns and carrying out a positive strategy for Elementary school-wide discipline in a way that aligns with VOICE’s mission, vision, and values. The individual in the role would also be responsible for de-escalating Elementary School student behavior with a focus on prevention.


Student Discipline

  • Promote VOICE’s approach to behavior management and discipline Elementary-school wide, and ensure that expectations are set across all students
  • De-escalate students when they are upset or in crisis
  • Regularly circulate through classrooms and hallways in order to ensure a strong school culture, providing behavioral intervention when necessary for students
  • Maximize student instruction time by establishing and carrying out a process in which students who have been removed from class are successfully reintegrated into the classroom
  • Execute systems that support and maintain an effective school culture, including attendance, restoration room maintenance, consequences, and suspensions
  • Ensure the engagement and safety of students during non-academic times (lunch/recess, arrival, dismissal) through supporting the training of students and staff on procedures during non-academic times, and through the direct supervision of students
  • Review incident reports to ensure reports are completed and that parent communication was made, and determine follow-up actions
  • Collaborate with Classroom Assistants, Teachers, Social Workers, and Deans in prioritizing support for students with significant behavioral and emotional needs and to providing long-term support to students and their families, when necessary
  • Promote restorative practices for students who have social-emotional needs that are in line with our mission, vision, and values
  • Help monitor students identified as Tier 2 and Tier 3 as part of Behavioral Response to Intervention process
  • Develop relationships with all students, but especially those who exhibit social-emotional needs
  • Provide training for Classroom Assistants and Teachers regarding behavioral management strategies related to their work


Communication and Collaboration

  • Communicate Classroom Assistant progress and needs to supervising Dean
  • Serve as a helper in hiring of Classroom Assistants
  • Support positive school culture by attending VOICE social events
  • Communicate with families via phone or in-person, regarding updates related to student behavior, and follow up with families regarding incidents


Professionalism and Work Day Expectations

  • Fully participate in all administrative meetings, designated school functions such as overnight field trips outside of school hours, and opportunities for individual and school-wide professional development
  • Assist with the development and execution of school-wide changes to enhance the VOICE community

Educational Background and Work Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required; degree in Social Work or Counseling preferred
  • At least two years of full time experience supporting and supervising children required
  • Experience in Response to Intervention required
  • Experience working in an urban school setting preferred
  • Experience working in a school or therapeutic setting with groups of children preferred
