ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW


The Women’s Environment and Development Organization (WEDO) is a women’s global advocacy organization based in New York. Officially founded in 1991 in the run-up to the Earth Summit (UNCED, 1992,) WEDO, a champion for women’s rights, has built a reputation as a trailblazer in promoting human rights, gender equality and the integrity of the environment, notably in sustainable development.

 

POSITION SUMMARY


The Senior Programs Manager will join the WEDO team to support the implementation of key programmatic goals, including a portfolio of activities supporting feminist action on climate justice launched at the 2021 Generation Equality Forum (GEF). This is a leadership position within an established, global advocacy organization, and the person filling this role will play a key role in advancing WEDO’s new strategic plan, with a focus on growing grassroots global leadership, implementing a feminist blueprint for economic justice and collecting and utilizing gender-responsive data. 


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversee program management, deliverables and impact measures across three specific grant portfolios in relation to broad areas of the WEDO strategic plan;
  • Develop workplans for key grant portfolios, monitor implementation of activities, manage budget plans and coordinate with staff on final report drafting;
  • Build and maintain a high level of communication and positive relationships with global feminist and climate justice networks and allies;
  • Provide strategic direction for advocacy strategies in numerous global policy spaces and establish monitoring and evaluation measures for monitoring advocacy objectives in relation to broader WEDO goals and strategies;
  • Work with program staff to organize events, briefings, and other public actions in coordination with allied organizations, coalitions, policy stakeholders, and WEDO partners;
  • Create materials to articulate and promote WEDO’s priority policy positions and issue areas, particularly in relation to specific program deliverables.
  • Participate in and monitor UN meetings and other conferences related to gender equality, climate change, economic justice and sustainable development;
  • Represent WEDO and communicate WEDO positions clearly at meetings and speaking events.

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Demonstrated commitment to WEDO’s vision and deep alignment with its feminist values;
  • At least five-six years’ experience managing programs/projects in a nonprofit environment, with a focus on within human rights, gender equality, environment and/or social justice as advantageous;
  • Strong and demonstrated project management and organizational leadership and skills; ability to manage many distinct areas of work at once;
  • Strong research, policy analysis, writing, editing, and proofreading skills;
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills in English are essential; knowledge of French, Spanish and/or Portuguese is an advantage;
  • Familiarity with current issues related to gender equality, environmental and social justice, and multilateralism broadly, in different local, national and global contexts;
  • Experience working across UN processes is an advantage;
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a small-team-oriented environment while also carrying out responsibilities with considerable independence;
  • Effective time management skills;
  • Willingness to travel internationally for between one to two weeks at a time;
  • Critically thinking, positive and fun individual.
