Position Overview

The Senior Operations Director will partner with the Chief People Officer (CPO) and members of the People Team to anticipate, identify, and build future products and services that enable the culture, mindsets and skillsets needed to increase performance for City Year’s nearly 1,000 staff and 2,800 AmeriCorps members.


In this role, you will use holistic qualitative and quantitative People data, as well as individual lived experiences, to drive engagement, impact, and results. This role requires a solid foundation of data and analytical skills, knowledge of how complex systems work, and a foundation of change management across multiple business units. You will also lead the operations of the People Team and support the People Leadership team to meaningfully collaborate and communicate, and drive high impact, high visibility projects that involve multiple cross-functional teams and build alignment across the People team, organization to increase engagement, impact, and effectiveness.

What you’ll do: 

As the Senior Operations Director, you will be the center pole of the People Team’s data, operations, budget, and project planning. Your core areas will be the following: 

Drive people-centered organizational-wide initiatives and build a holistic data eco-system to understand the future skills and experiences City Year needs to drive engagement and performance 

  • Understand and use current state of data including existing surveys, business intelligence systems and reports as a key mechanism for alignment 
  • Lead a cross-functional effort to strengthen this eco-system to identify the appropriate levers for organizational improvement and ensure its automation and sustainability 
  • Be able to use this data system to drive key decisions, strategies, products and services from stakeholder groups, including the People Team, Analytics and Planning Team, Transformation Team and the Management Executive Committee 
  • Product own key data systems, including the People Metrics Report 
  • Lead the execution of initiatives/special projects including leading on any pressing organizational challenges and opportunities. 
  • Build collaborative relationships with colleagues at all levels of the organization and manage through influence to get work done 
  • Partner with the CPO and VP, Internal Communications to craft effective communications – including but not limited to weekly leadership emails, all-team presentations, board decks and all staff/corps communications. 

Lead People Team Operations and Contribute to an Inclusive Culture 

  • In partnership with members of the People Team, facilitate the annual strategic planning process for the People Team 
  • Support the operational cadence of the People team, ensuring it relates to the broader calendar of the organization  
  • Plan, prepare, co-lead, and follow up on leadership and team meetings in a way that fosters a healthy team culture – facilitating constructive debate, fostering team bonding, surfacing misalignment, creating shared context, managing action items, and holding leaders accountable for their deliverables 
  • Implement and manage any team-wide systems, protocols, and processes necessary for optimizing People team performance and culture 
  • In partnership with CPO, Special Project Manager, and PLT, manage team convenings, including monthly meetings, town halls, and MS Teams spaces to ensure optimal information sharing, collaboration, and communication 
  • Oversee financial management of the People Team budget, designing and implementing systems for evaluating return on personnel and non-personnel investments 

 

Center People Team Impact, Effectiveness and Communications 

  • Collaborate with People team members to ensure cohesive and unified communication of the team’s deliverables and services, and how users access and leverage us – including cyconnect presence and other internal communications 
  • In collaboration with cohort conveners and Internal Communications, coordinate on communication sequencing and change management 

Lead, Develop and Collaborate with Special Projects Manager 

  • Be a supportive manager to the team’s Special Projects Manager who serves as executive assistant to the CPO and members of the PLT and supports the day-to-day work in team operations management and culture building

  • You love making connections between people and data and being an “arranger” to help ships sail smoothly

  • You have strong change management skills and can lead the operational and communications efforts needed to effectively navigate multiple work streams in a complex changing environment 
  • You possess excellent verbal and written communication skills – including great emails, effective summaries, and impactful decks – in a style that is concise, kind, and capable of inspiring a team 
  • You embrace a culture of constructive feedback and can serve as a candid and caring truth teller, especially to leaders and executives – with a proven ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with care and discretion 
  • You seek out partnerships and offer help before others have realized it would be beneficial 

This position's location is flexible in the U.S.; proximity to City Year site location preferred. Occasional travel is required once regular travel resumes.
