About NLP

Founded in 2008, the News Literacy Project is a national nonpartisan education nonprofit

that empowers educators to teach middle and high school students how to sort fact from fiction in the digital age. Our central offering is the Checkology® virtual classroom, an online e- learning hub. Since the platform was introduced in 2016, almost 35,000 teachers have registered to use it in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, four U.S. territories and 113 other countries.

About the position

As a community manager, you will work closely with NLP’s vice president of the educator network. This work focuses on implementing the strategy that builds our local footprint for regional organizing efforts in the fight against misinformation. To reach our goal of embedding news literacy in the American education experience, NLP is launching NewsLit Nation: the News Literacy Educator Network. This largely virtual network will be a user-friendly tool that allows educators to come together as an online community; participate in professional development opportunities; track progress to professional development goals, and register early for training events. The network also will provide educators the opportunity to learn best practices from others in the field and to access exclusive resources, supports and incentives. We are seeking an all-around community mobilizer who will manage the day-to-day aspects of our virtual community and our in-person, live events. The successful candidate will be conversant in digital culture and education technology. You will work with colleagues across the organization to advance our work and support our strategic goals. Ideally, you will be unafraid to experiment and a highly motivated self-starter who displays personal integrity and a positive influence.

In this job, you will:

·        Manage and track progress to goals for NLP’s ambassador program, which involves news literacy ambassadors advocating in their respective regions for the cause of news literacy education.

·        Engage with educators daily on the NewsLit Nation online platform, including creating content, answering questions, hosting live events within the platform, etc.

·        Manage a robust program of in-person community-building events.

·        Work across NLP teams to advance our work and support strategic goals.

·        Meet deadlines and be able to stay within budget.

·        Possess strong communication and collaboration skills.

About you

In addition to the qualifications noted, the successful candidate also will have all or most of the following:

·        Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.

·        A minimum of four years of experience in community organizing, including planning events and making virtual connections.

·        Knowledge of virtual community-building techniques and tools.

·        Computer skills that include the Microsoft Office suite (particularly Word, PowerPoint and Excel).

·        Experience and comfort working in a virtual work environment (in terms of both technology tools and personal skills).

·        Some policy experience in the context of community mobilizing.

This position is virtual; the successful candidate can live anywhere in the continental United States.
