Position Summary:

The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF), a nonprofit organization, is a leader in health policy analysis, polling and survey research, health journalism, and communications. KFF serves as a nonpartisan source of facts, information, and analysis for policymakers, the media, the health care community, and the public.

We seek a seasoned Storyteller/Grant Writer to craft a unique voice for KFF’s donor materials ranging from grant proposals and reports to newsletters, presentations, and other formal correspondence. Our ideal candidate can weave complex and technical ideas into compelling narratives that will delight, inform, and inspire KFF’s growing donor community. Your love of words, persuasive writing, and ability to connect the dots on big picture strategy will be key to the success in this role. You’re an active listener, idea generator, and can write stories that resonate with a wide-ranging audience, from large institutional funders to individual major donors. You like a combination of behind-the-scenes work, ideating with others and translating that information for maximum effect. You thrive in fast-paced environments and can execute on a variety of high-stakes, time-sensitive, deliverables. This is a new position reporting to the VP of Development and would ideally be based in KFF’s San Francisco, CA headquarters or its Washington, DC office. 

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications and includes an excellent benefits package.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• In partnership with the VP of Development and VPs of Program determine proposal concept by identifying and clarifying opportunities and needs, studying philanthropic trends/opportunities, and attending program strategy meetings;

• Develop proposal and other fundraising materials by assembling information including project nature, objectives/outcomes/deliverables, implementation, methods, timetable, staffing, budget, standards of performance, and evaluation;

• Work in partnership with the Director of Contract Management and Budget Analysis to meet proposal deadlines by establishing priorities and target dates for information gathering, writing, review, approval, and transmittal;

• Collaborate with VP of Development to research, draft, and develop creative print and multimedia marketing content and assets for donor audiences including broad case for support, fundraising presentations, project marketing materials, case studies, and impact and annual reports;

• Write and develop donor facing and fundraising marketing materials that are well researched, tell a story, and are on brand;

• Leverage formats that include written word, infographics, and imagery, to tell compelling stories of KFF’s programs, impact, and donor achievements;

• Stay current on KFF programs and public health issues to maintain relevance and appropriate program content;

• Work in partnership with KFF’s communications team to ensure materials adhere to our organization design and written style guide to provide a consistent look and feel.

MINIMUM DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

• 3-5 years relevant content development experience, including writing, editing, and publications experience at a non-profit;

• Polished writing and editing skills with proven ability to translate complex concepts into succinct, clear, accessible language for multiple audiences; you understand the power of the written word and can create evocative and memorable stories;

• Strong project management skills with attention to detail and demonstrated ability to set priorities and complete tasks in a timely manner; skilled at shepherding publications from concept to delivery;

• Enthusiastic and natural team player with the ability to work with cross-functional, virtual, and diverse teams to develop plans and drive results;

• Excellent interpersonal skills with the confidence to interact effectively with all levels of management, staff, and external partners;

• Must be able to interview people from all backgrounds with an understanding of diversity, equity, and justice;

• Experience receiving feedback openly and ability to incorporate suggested edits;

• Technologically savvy, with proficiency using all Microsoft Office programs, Google suite, and Salesforce or similar grant database.
