THE POSITION

Orleans Parish Prison Reform Coalition (OPPRC) seeks a creative, passionate, and self-motivated full-time Communication Manager. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications Manager will proactively support strategic initiatives by ensuring that OPPRC’s messaging is clear, consistent, and engaging. This role is responsible for developing, guiding, and executing strategy for all internal and external communications including but not limited to membership emails, website maintenance, social media management, and donor communications. The Communications Manager will serve as a spokesperson for the organization while building and maintaining relationships with media outlets. As the lead communications staff, the applicant will work to define organizational position on key issues and work collaboratively to draft key/core messaging. The ideal candidate will strongly support building a cross-issue political analysis with a multi-racial team to advance OPPRC’s mission to stop jail expansion, improve jail conditions, and promote alternatives to incarceration in Orleans Parish.

THE ORGANIZATION

OPPRC is a diverse, grassroots coalition of individuals and organizations committed to decarcerating New Orleans, improving conditions of confinement in the jail, and promoting healthy alternatives to incarceration. Since our founding in 2004, we have worked to reduce the number of people incarcerated in New Orleans from more than 6,300 people before Hurricane Katrina in 2005 (more than 5x the national average) to fewer than 800 people today. Our work has led to the most dramatic jail population reduction per capita in the United States. Despite these successes, we know the progress we may have made is still not enough, and we welcome you to apply and join our team.

Our members include formerly incarcerated New Orleanians, families directly impacted by incarceration, community activists, lawyers, service providers, and organizers. We will continue to build a safe and healthy community that doesn’t rely on over-policing and over-incarceration as the answer to society’s problems.
