The Ford Foundation financial services team seeks a dynamic, collaborative, critical thinker in the role of Senior Manager, Tax Planning, Reporting & Compliance responsible for managing all aspects of tax planning, reporting, and compliance functions with the dual responsibilities for the foundation’s corporate taxes as well as global payroll and vendor tax reporting. This role requires in-depth knowledge of IRS statutes and insight into interpreting IRS guidance and rules.

The position is responsible for the preparation and filing of the Foundation’s corporate tax returns, Form 990-PF and 990-T.  The Forms require in-depth knowledge of the Foundation’s investment, grant-making, payroll and operational activities, which all have impact on the calculation of the Foundation’s taxes as well as presentation of information on these forms. 

Additionally, the position evaluates the tax implications of the Foundation’s corporate and personnel-related activities and ensures compliance with these.  Advises management on future changes to tax regulations and the possible impact to the organization. Manages direct relationships with Foundation staff, external auditors and advisor, vendors and other advisors. 

The ideal candidate is a highly motivated self-starter with refined critical thinking skills and strong ability to partner across the foundation.


  • Monitor tax regulations and new statutes and their impact on the Foundation; communicate implication of the changes to management and colleagues to assist in the development of strategies or procedures to address changes
  • Manage preparation of the Foundation’s federal tax return Form 990-PF by external auditors; review calculation of Foundation taxes, minimum investment return, payout requirements, qualifying distributions and undistributed income
  • Manage preparation of the Foundation’s federal return Form 990-T and state tax returns by external auditors; reviewing the Foundation’s investment and MRI portfolio and all other Foundation financial activities to determine any unrelated business income subject to taxation
  • Manage preparation of Foundation’s federal and state tax return Form 990 for the Foundation’s Voluntary Employees' Beneficiary Association (VEBA) trust.
  • Review preparation of all federal quarterly tax estimates, extensions and payments ensuring payment compliance
  • Review and calculate items from partnership K-1’s and other tax reporting to determine required reporting of the Foundation’s share of the partnership’s income, deductions, and credits
  • Maintain database of investments with domicile, corporate, and tax structures and applicable regulatory filings (e.g. IRS forms 926, 5471, 8865, etc.)
  • Analyze the Foundation’s compensation to comply with section 4960 excise taxes; review preparation by external auditor of form 4720
  • Review filing of various forms such as 6166, CRS, ST119.1, etc. to mitigate any withholding on foreign taxes, income taxes and sales taxes
  • Respond to federal, state and local correspondences, inquiries and audits. Satisfying that all the requirements are met and ensuring a positive outcome


  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of tax laws, regulations, revenue rulings and court decisions particularly as applicable to the Foundation’s operations; advise Foundation staff and payroll department on applicable tax law changes
  • Review and approve support schedules and hypothetical tax calculations prepared by payroll unit for all expatriate staff
  • Review and approve tax equalization computations prepared by external advisor for expatriate staff.  Review preparation of required tax equalization and gross-up calculations
  • Review transmittals of form 1099
  • Advise staff on tax treaties and completing forms such as W8-BEN, W8-BEN-E, 8233 etc.
  • Advisor payroll department on calculation, reporting and tax gross-up calculation of employee related taxable benefits
  • Advise and guide staff, with signature authority over a Foundation bank account, with their filing of an FBAR (FinCEN Report 114)


  • Responsible for tax calculations and withholdings for nonresident alien individual grants and other payments
  • Ensures timely payments of all taxes to regulatory authorities
  • Review preparation of Forms 1042S and Form 1042 for all nonresident alien grantees, trustees and consultant


  • Bachelor’s degree in Tax, Accounting, Business management or related
  • 7-10 years tax preparation experience with public accounting firm, 3-5 years with private foundation
  • Background or familiarity with investment operations including processing and execution of new investments.
  • CPA preferred
  • Sound knowledge of compliance regulations for organizations working within the not-for-profit sector


This position is primarily a sedentary role. However, the person in this position may need to occasionally move about inside the office to liaise with internal staff, access files, office machinery and a copy machine/printer. Additionally, domestic/international travel will be expected, approximately 20% of working time. Some travel is directly related to grantmaking, but also required to attend team conferences, retreats and meetings.
