St. Nicks Alliance is a nonprofit, nonsectarian community-based organization founded in 1975 with the mission to serve as a catalyst to improve the quality of life of residents in the communities of Williamsburg-Greenpoint in Brooklyn through its work in five main areas: housing, healthcare, workforce development, economic development and youth and education.


Established in 1994, the Division of Youth & Education serves 2,500 youth and family members annually with a mission to enable young people to become lifelong learners and thrive as adults. All programs are grounded in well-established youth development principles and as such are characterized by trusting, caring relationships with peers and adults; youth engagement and input; and a sense of belonging and community.


St. Nicks' Division of Youth and Education is seeking an Assistant Director for its comprehensive After School Program for students in grades K-5 who live in Brooklyn, NY.

Afterschool Center Assistant Director Job Description:

  • Responsible for overall leadership of an after school center serving grades K-5 in an elementary school.

Staff Supervision:

  • Hire and train after school staff.
  • Provide on-going observation, coaching and feedback to staff

After School and Summer Programming:

  • Recruit participants and build strong, collaborative relationships with program parents, school personnel, partners, and community members.
  • Provide daily, direct supervision of elementary and middle school age after school program, ensuring all safety procedures, daily schedules, curriculum implementation, and group management protocols are followed.
  • Gather resources and curriculum for Literacy, STEM, social-emotional development, physical fitness, nutrition, service-learning, gender groups, and career / college prep; support staff with lesson planning and implementation for these core program components
  • Collaborate with 21CCLC Center Director and Elementary Team on development of active, enriching theme-based summer camp for elementary and middle school students, with the goal of stemming summer learning loss and providing opportunities for growth and hands-on learning; for summer, serve as camp director or assistant camp director.

Partnership Development:

  • Develop strong relationships with parents and community adults both to support learning and development of young people and to provide opportunities for adult enrichment.
  • Facilitate parent orientation session in the fall and summer; conduct monthly parent meetings and family engagement activities.

Administrative & Other:

  • Develop systems and support administrative staff with management in online data systems (DYCD, ETO and Youth Services) to ensure accurate records and to achieve mandates.
  • Ability to meet SACC program requirements including submitting paperwork for clearances, updating SACC licenses as need and submitting Summer Camp paperwork.
  • Support short and long term division-wide implementation of program planning and outcomes tracking; specifically, seek ways to improve school attendance, school attachment, academic self-efficacy, employment self-efficacy, skills for success (social-emotional skills), literacy, and lifelong learning.


Requirements:

  • Strong engagement skills and love for young people
  • Ability to effectively build collaborative relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders
  • Bachelors degree with at least two year's experience with school age population in after school center supervising staff.
  • OR, Associate's degree or significant progress towards bachelors degree and at least three years experience with after school programs, including in a leadership role
  • High standards for program planning and implementation
  • Commitment and enthusiasm for a culture of continuous improvement
  • Experience and commitment to coaching and developing young staff members
  • Excellent group and classroom management skills
  • Understanding of and commitment to youth development principles
  • Creativity, flexibility, and adaptability
  • Ability to meet School Age Child Care (SACC) requirements including background check and medical clearance.
