Description

Opportunity Council is a Community Action Agency in northwest Washington State, whose mission is to help people improve their lives through education, support and direct assistance. Maple Alley Inn (MAI) is a hot meal program that is devoted to preparing three delicious and highly nutritious meals each week to low income families, chronically homeless individuals, veterans, people with disabilities, and isolated seniors. The MAI community garden serves as a primary source of local, fresh, organic produce that supplies each meal service. Meals are only part of the service provided at MAI. Law Advocates, community health providers, homeless outreach and more all use MAI as a location to connect with clients to provide additional and complementary services. With the help of approximately 60 volunteers the AmeriCorps members will coordinate three nutritious meals a week. This will include meal planning, preparation, serving, and clean up. Members will also maintain inventory and supplies at two locations and serve seasonally in the garden to plant, weed, water, harvest, and process produce. The members’ will assess where diners are at with access to food by conducting an interview to determine SNAP benefit status and, if applicable, guiding the individual through the application process. Ensure awareness of the Free Food and Meal Resource Guide to optimize access to other meal programs and food banks in the area. Members will meet with diners to understand their education needs and refer them to appropriate health and nutrition education classes both at Maple Alley, and in the community. Members will survey each diner to understand if dining at MAI and/or utilizing SNAP benefits has helped to increase their food security. Maple Alley Inn is a community gathering place where individuals facing poverty and homelessness can come together to share a conversation, friendship, and connection in a welcoming environment over food made with intention and care.
