Executive Assistant to Judith Heumann

Judith (Judy) Heumann is an internationally recognized disability advocate who served in the Clinton and Obama Administrations and co-founded the first Independent Living Center and the World Institute on Disability. She was a leading pioneer of the Disability Rights Movement beginning in the 1970's and continues to work tirelessly to improve the lives of Disabled people through legal and social channels in the U.S. and around the world. She is featured in the documentary "Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution," a 2020 award winning Netflix documentary film, directed by James LeBrecht and Nicole Newnham, produced by the Obama Higher Ground Production. In 2020, she published her memoir "Being Heumann: An Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist" alongside Kristin Joiner. The Young Adult version, “Rolling Warrior: The Incredible, Sometimes Awkward, True Story of a Rebel on Wheels, Who Helped Spark A Revolution” was published in 2021. She produces The Heumann Perspective, a podcast and YouTube channel that aim to share the beauty and diversity of the disability community. Judy is a sought after speaker for companies, nonprofits and media outlets. Her presentations are focused on advancing the inclusion of disabled people through addressing ableism, learning about disability history and proactively bringing the voices of disabled people centrally in their work. Judy also serves on several boards including Human Rights Watch and the American Association of People with Disabilities. She is seeking an Executive Assistant to support this work.


Judy is seeking a Female Executive Assistant. This is a full-time commitment based in Washington, DC. The Executive Assistant is expected to work 40hrs/week with availability to work additional evenings and weekends as needed. The Executive Assistant is also expected to accompany Judy on travel, both domestic and international. Trips typically range from 1-7 days and hours will vary. In addition, all expenses while on travel will be covered (i.e., airfare, hotel, food) and additional salary will be paid during travel.

  • Speaking Engagements with Fortune 500 companies also for smaller companies, organizations, primary schools and Universities
  • Media Appearances, Interviews and Endeavors for Disability Representation in TV and Film 
  • Advisor for DMAP
  • Board Member for AAPD, Communication First, Human Rights Watch, HI (Humanity and Inclusion), and several more organizations
  • Literary Projects including her memoir "Being Heumann," a young adult version of the memoir, "Rolling Warrior" and an upcoming Children's Book


Responsibilities for the Role of Executive Assistant Include:

  • Manage significant number of Emails and Google Calendar 
  • Create prep material including background research for meetings, and print out and organize a weekly schedule 
  • Assist with travel arrangements working with travel agency and hotels to assure access is appropriate to Judy’s needs
  • Organize finances including review of proposed contracts
  • Billing/invoicing organizations
  • Working with accountant, tracking, uploading contracts and deposits
  • Working collaboratively with the Social Media Specialist on all projects  
  • Provide personal assistance- No previous experience with personal assistance required (Judy is a post-polio quadriplegic who uses a motorized wheelchair). This involves transferring up to 115 pounds, restroom assistance, general assistance during the day, assistance with computer, assisting with lunch, tidying up
  • While on travel assisting with personal needs including bathing, dressing, packing and unpacking, etc.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Well organized, personable, good disposition and able to work in complex situations, innovative, creative, knowledgeable about social justice and disability, can work in changing culture 
  • Ability to work full-time in Washington, DC (accessible via Cleveland Park Metro, Woodley Park Metro and L1 / L2 buses) 
  • Ability to travel both domestically and internationally (preference a valid US Passport) 
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Willingness to work collaboratively in a small, close knit team 
  • Willingness to learn and be open to new experiences 
  • Strong attention to detail 
  • Work well under pressure 
  • Able to balance multiple tasks and deadlines
  • Proficiency with Google Suite (Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar) 
  • Knowledge of disability community on social media
  • Knowledge of Finances or willingness to take provided course on Finance Management 
  • Prior experience with bookkeeping and/or record keeping (works with accountant)
  • 1-3 years prior office or assistant experience preferred
  • Interest in Disability Rights and Justice
