The Coalition for the Homeless is the nation’s oldest advocacy and direct service organization helping homeless men, women and children. We believe that affordable housing, sufficient food and the chance to work for a living wage are fundamental rights in a civilized society. Since our inception in 1981, the Coalition has worked through litigation, public education and direct services to ensure that these goals are realized.


POSITION SUMMARY: Develops and directs the Coalition for the Homeless strategy for asserting and defending the legal rights of homeless New Yorkers. Analyzes public policies with respect to homelessness in New York City, including the provision of homeless services and the related issues of housing, welfare, and mental health policies. In coordination with the Deputy Executive Director for Policy, Advocacy staff and Coalition leadership, develops strategy, policy background, and message for the Coalition’s monitoring work, advocacy/public policy agenda, litigation strategy, and various advocacy campaigns. In coordination with the Deputy Executive Director for Policy, Advocacy staff and Coalition leadership, develops the Coalition’s public education and policy materials and supervises its media strategy on public policy issues related to the Coalition’s mission. The Director of Government Relations and Legal Affairs shall demonstrate exemplary leadership, provide a vision, and foster a tone consistent with the values, mission, and goals of the Coalition for the Homeless.


QUALIFICATIONS: JD required. Ten years of progressively greater responsibility for advocacy, media, organizing, campaign, government, and/or direct service experience with homelessness, housing, poverty, public benefits, or related issues. Six years of experience with public policy issues. Exceptional leadership qualities, writing and editing ability as well as polished oral presentation, media relations, strategic advocacy, and analytical skills required. Litigation experience not required but may be helpful.


REPORTS TO: Deputy Executive Director for Policy


SALARY: $120K - $130K commensurate with experience and education, with excellent benefits package
