Broad Role Function/Purpose

The Digital Director is a deeply skilled digital generalist with a wide-range of responsibilities that cut across nearly the entire United Way of Northern New Jersey digital operation. He/she conceptualizes, plans, implements, and manages United Way of Northern New Jersey’s digital operation such that the organization is optimally positioned to deliver exceptional experiences to its stakeholders, and, in turn, achieve its goals. The Digital Director is experienced technically, can stretch limited resources, and excels in addressing business needs with digital solutions. The Digital Director also prioritizes the management and development of the Digital Team, collaborates effectively cross-functionally, has a customer service mindset, can manage multiple priorities and projects, and seamlessly straddles between visionary and implementor. The Director is a member of the Senior Management Team, and reports to the Chief Experience Officer. 

Responsibilities & Essential Functions

Vision and Planning

The Digital Director assesses business needs, and creates the vision and plans to meet those needs digitally. The Director:

  •  Regularly gathers business needs from executive, department, and program leadership
  • Conceptualizes solutions to meet the business needs, including exploring and pursuing technologies (new and old)
  • Builds and implements, with his/her team, detailed plans to realize the agreed upon solutions
  • Continually evaluates performance of the digital solutions, and optimizes when necessary

Website Management

The Digital Director is responsible for the backend of the organization’s website(s) and co-owns the frontend with the VP of Marketing and Communications. The Director:

  • Continually assesses the website(s), and identifies and pursues opportunities to improve functionality and the user experience
  •  Employs strategies that positively impact SEO, driving high volume and high value traffic to the organization’s website(s)
  •  Is well-versed in content management systems, and ensures the effective use of those systems
  • Ensures safe and effective data capture
  • Protects the website with strong security measures
  • Builds and revises sites/pages in collaboration with the Marketing & Communications team, and program leadership to meet organization and program needs, and deliver outstanding stakeholder interactions
  •  Oversees the delivery of monthly analysis and reports regarding website performance
  •  Utilizes outside website management and development resources (agencies/consultant) when deemed necessary, and budget allows


CRM System Oversight

The Digital Director is responsible for all aspects of the organization’s CRM system (currently Andar). The Director:

  • Establishes and maintains a strong relationship with CRM provider
  •  Continually assesses the functionality and use of the organization’s CRM system, and regularly pursues opportunities to optimize functionality and use
  •  Develops and oversees processes for efficient and timely data entry, data capture, data cleaning, and data security
  • Ensures data/contacts within CRM system can be easily sorted, utilized for outreach, queried, and analyzed
  • Trains, and/or employs others (internal or external) to train, the organization to ensure optimal understanding and usage of the CRM system
  • Oversees the preparation and execution of email campaigns
  • Oversees the delivery of monthly analysis and reports regarding CRM system performance


Digital Marketing

The Digital Director will collaborate closely with the VP, Marketing & Communications to deliver a strong presence for the organization and its programs on search engines, other websites, and apps. The Director will:

  • Identify and introduce the organization to new channels and technologies that could be used in reaching key stakeholders and/or elevating our key stakeholder experience  
  • Support, with insights, expertise, and industry knowledge, the Marketing & Communications team in its effective use of social media
  • Support, with insights, expertise, and industry knowledge, the Marketing & Communications team in its use of Google Grants

Digital Tools to Enhance the Business

The Digital Director will support the organization, departments, and programs by identifying, evaluating, and implementing technologies/platforms/software that enhance operations and/or the stakeholder experience. This includes, among others:

  • Donor prospecting
  • Fundraising
  • Event preparation and execution
  •  Personnel recruitment

Team Development/Management & Organization-wide Collaboration

The Digital Director is responsible for the development and performance of the Digital Team. The Digital Director will:

  • Provide clear goals, regular communication, strategic guidance, coaching, and skill assessment/training/development for the team.
  • Instill in the team a customer service mindset, a solutions-orientation, and a stakeholder focus.
  • Develop customer service processes and protocols for the team to adhere to that ensure timely responses to requests for help, exceptional communication, and the delivery of high-quality solutions.

Further, the Digital Director is a key leader within the organization who will:

  • Engage and influence beyond the immediate team, across the organization at all levels to create support for meaningful change
  •  Flex style to meet the differing needs of different groups, and build understanding of new areas, building capability across the organization
  • Provide clear Digital coaching and mentoring to key stakeholders
  •  Create, nurture, and enhance relationships with all stakeholders and customers.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science or similar
  • Minimum of ten years of experience in a digital role, including three years of management experience
  • Minimum of five years of experience managing CRM systems
  • Minimum of five years of experience developing and managing websites
  • Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL, JS and NGNIX
  • Three years of experience with digital marketing is preferred
  • Three years of programming experience is preferred
