Overview:

The Policy Research Associate is responsible for engaging in research, writing, analytical thinking, and project management activities that support the goals of the Policy & Advocacy team and advance NCLD’s policy agenda. The Policy Research Associate will be responsible for developing and maintaining expert, up-to-the-minute knowledge of the relevant policy and political issues involved in advancing NCLD’s policy agenda. This person will work closely with the Policy Manager to inform policy and advocacy efforts at the federal and state level.


Specifically, we are seeking a person with the following attributes:

  • Effective communication, both with colleagues and with NCLD’s stakeholder audiences, including parents, advocates, education professionals, researchers, experts, and policymakers.
  • Problem-solving, including gathering data from multiple and diverse sources, asking the right questions, and accurately analyzing situations.
  • Action oriented, ready to take on new opportunities and contribute to the team in whichever ways are needed.


Policy Research Associate Core Responsibilities:

The duties of the position include but are not limited to the following:

 

  • Discover, research, analyze and write about federal and state legislation, regulations, and guidance impacting individuals with learning difficulties, disabilities or attention issues. Make recommendations about possible NCLD strategy and actions regarding relevant legislation, regulations and guidance.
  • Conduct research and develop materials to inform the team about novel and emerging trends and issues related to the education of students with learning disabilities. 
  • Prepare written reports, memos, letters, emails, opinion editorials, speeches and PowerPoint presentations to persuade and inform both policy makers and NCLD’s advocacy community.
  • Collaborate with NCLD’s Policy, Young Adult and Communications teams to develop ideas and accessible web content about policy and advocacy issues. Participate in planning and implementing communications and marketing efforts related to Public Policy and Advocacy including, but not limited to, blog, Facebook and twitter posts, emails and action alerts.
  • Attend coalition meetings, briefings, and other events that relate to federal policy and advocacy issues NCLD is tracking. 
  • Work with NCLD’s Policy team to coordinate logistics, communications and manage “Hill Day” events, briefings, and other events to support NCLD’s policy agenda.


Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • 1-3 years of policy experience 
  • Bachelor’s degree, with Master’s or law degree preferred
  • Excellent research, writing and analytical skills
  • Exceptional communication skills, include writing and speaking abilities
  • Desire to advocate for children and adults with learning and attention issues
  • Knowledge of learning disabilities and education and disability policy issues 
  • Sense of humor 
  • Is able to adapt and be flexible when the circumstances and agenda demand it
  • Ability to work as part of team, but complete independent work as necessary
