Overview

Student1, a mission-oriented nonprofit organization located in Austin, TX, is looking to grow our team with a Senior Project Manager (PM) passionate about impacting the national education data landscape. The successful candidate will be committed to and inspired by the opportunity to equip states, districts, educators, and service providers with tools to better inform their decisions and support their students.

The Senior PM will be expected to design and implement multiple initiatives to support our partners' efforts around improved information sharing, data governance, and communication with students and their success teams. The position will engage with our clients, organization leadership, and the development team to build innovative technology solutions and design data governance and management systems. The responsibilities will include managing multiple types of projects simultaneously, and the applicant must be comfortable switching contexts and juggling competing priorities.

All work is currently virtual but will transition to a hybrid model and will be based in Austin, TX.

Responsibilities

The Senior PM will guide a portfolio of projects designed to help partners maximize their use of available data and expand systems to better meet the needs of those they serve. This role will manage technical and business-focused projects and may also lead requirements gathering, stakeholder engagement, and data use and governance trainings and workshops. Responsibilities include:

  • Leading cross-functional teams through the full project life cycle; clearly communicating expectations, timelines, and status to internal and client teams; and ensuring that the project schedule and budget are clear, manageable, and achievable.
  • Managing relationships and communications with clients, partners, and internal teams through prompt responses, appropriate internal and external project status reports and deliverable presentations, and effective standing and ad hoc meetings.
  • Designing and/or facilitating stakeholder coaching, training, and requirements gathering workshops.
  • Keeping abreast of all organization programs and projects, identifying opportunities for collaboration, and effectively stepping in when additional assistance or advice is needed.
  • Assisting with strategic planning.

Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

This position operates with limited oversight; initiative, problem-solving, and communications skills are crucial. A commitment to excellent client and partner support and engagement is required. Specific requirements include:

  • At least five years' experience managing progressively larger or higher-profile projects or initiatives, preferably at or in partnership with government entities or social service organizations.
  • Skill in asking probing questions of the technical team in order to accurately explain complex technical issues, especially for a non-technical audience, and communicate main takeaways and next steps.
  • Strong understanding of the data needs and challenges of state education agencies, schools, and/or social service providers, especially related to system integration, data standardization, and privacy.
  • Excellent client-facing written and verbal communication skills; strong presentation, requirements gathering, and facilitation skills; and experience presenting information in a variety of settings and formats to diverse audiences.
  • Experience managing cross-functional teams, especially within an agile environment.

Candidates with diverse professional experience related to education or social service program design and management and data collection and use are encouraged to apply.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with education data standards (e.g., Ed-Fi or CEDS) and data governance frameworks.
  • Experience coaching or providing technical assistance in data use.
