T’ruah is seeking a full-time Communications Assistant to implement our communications strategy by writing content, administering systems, and tracking reach and engagement. This person will add value to the communications team by ensuring that external communications are clear, consistent, and in service of our organizational mission..

The ideal candidate is a strong writer and communicator who is comfortable writing for the web, has excellent attention to detail, is passionate about the work T’ruah does, and is an independent worker who is excited to learn and take ownership of their projects.

This is an exciting time to join T’ruah at an incredible moment of growth. We plan to expand our staff and our capacity over the next few months. We are at the beginning of an ambitious five-year plan to grow our organization and budget substantially, and we recently hired a Director of Strategy who will guide a process of organizational reflection and alignment to make sure we are maximizing our impact. You have the opportunity to get in on the ground floor.

Who We Are

T’ruah trains and mobilizes more than 2,300 rabbis and cantors from all streams of Judaism, together with all members of the Jewish community, to act on the Jewish imperative to respect and advance the human rights of all people. Grounded in Torah and our Jewish historical experience and guided by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we call upon Jews to assert Jewish values by raising our voices and taking concrete steps to protect and expand human rights in North America, Israel, and the occupied Palestinian territories.

Who You Are & Keys to Success

To be successful in this job, you will be or have:

  • Attention to detail: You copy edit your own and others’ writing with a keen eye for typos, organizational style, and toward inclusive, people-first language. You double check all communications before they go public. You take a big-picture view of each video, photo, graphic, email, and sentence to think about how it will be perceived by our audience and how it can be edited or changed to be as clear and compelling as possible.

  • Excellent writing skills: You write clear, concise copy. You convey information simply, without flowery or opaque language. You tailor writing to the specific platform (social media/ email/ website) and audience as needed. You choose words and phrases that will be easily understood by the broadest audience possible. You use correct grammar and spelling, and require very little copy editing of your own writing.

  • Comfort with social media, websites, and the digital world: You are familiar with and comfortable using at least one social media platform. You have an interest in social media and in learning more about what works on different platforms.

  • Strong sense of ownership and resilience: You generate many ideas and see them through to production. You prefer a hands-off management style, and you have the ability to take an idea and run with it while gathering input and asking for help as needed. You plan ahead and find alternative paths, when needed, to get to the finish line. You bounce back from setbacks and rejections. You hold a high bar even when things are hectic. You acknowledge mistakes and turn them into learning opportunities.

  • Knowledge and familiarity with racial equity and inclusion principles: You recognize ways that race and other identities intersect in the work, especially with communities we serve. You are comfortable talking about identities such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, class, ability, or gender in plain, specific terms. You understand the historical context for racial inequity and its present-day implications.

  • Alignment with T’ruah’s values: You have demonstrated interest in at least one of our issue areas, whether through studies, activities, or activism. You have the ability to articulate T’ruah’s mission and programmatic work clearly and compellingly.

Experience with the following are plusses but not requirements:

  1. Knowledge of the Jewish social justice space
  2. Graphic design skills
  3. Video editing skills
  4. Some experience writing for the internet, whether blogging or social media.

Systemic inequities in hiring have caused many women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ people to apply to jobs only if they meet 100% of the qualifications. If you don’t have all of the qualifications listed above but are a strong writer and communicator, passionate about our mission, and believe you have applicable and transferable skills from other industries, we encourage you to apply for this job. We’d love to hear from you. In your cover letter, be sure to explicitly highlight how your experience, skills, and personal qualities have set you up to succeed in the role.
