Public Relations and Social Media Manager

The Center for Civic Education seeks a public relations and social media manager to drive our public relations and social media outreach to our audience of K-12 social studies teachers, department heads, curriculum buyers, public officials, podcast listeners, and supporters. The Center (www.civiced.org) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan educational organization dedicated to fostering the development of informed, responsible participation in civic life by citizens committed to values and principles fundamental to constitutional democracy.

Basic Function

The public relations and social media manager will create and execute the Center for Civic Education’s social media and public relations strategies in concert with the Center’s president, director of publishing and digital content, and others. The ideal candidate will have at least 3 years of demonstrated experience in building and nurturing social media communities and generating earned news stories, preferably for a nonprofit organization. This position will include writing, editing, image and video creation, audience-building, and other duties as assigned.

This position requires part-time employment. Work will be conducted remotely from your location. Occasional weekend and evening work and travel may be required. Must be a citizen or legal permanent resident of the United States. Must reside in the United States.

Responsibilities

Work with the president and the director of publishing and digital content to carry out the following responsibilities:

  1. Develop and execute social media strategy across all the Center’s social media channels, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn
  2. Create press releases, press kits, fact sheets, media lists, and media pitches for the Center for Civic Education’s public relations and communication campaigns, helping to successfully pitch and secure media coverage
  3. Develop a media strategy, and as necessary help proactively push that strategy by engaging with media as necessary
  4. Develop and execute social media, marketing, and public relations content calendar
  5. Interact and reply to the Center’s audience in a friendly, collegial, supportive, and nonpartisan fashion
  6. Monitor social media tools and trends and appropriately apply that knowledge
  7. Write copy for social media, public relations, website, and marketing materials
  8. Conduct image research and prepare images for release
  9. Create and edit explainer videos, product videos, video ads and announcements, and other video as required
  10. Track all relevant social media metrics and report as required
  11. Travel to program events. Travel may take up to 10% of the position’s time.
  12. Maintain a positive attitude as a member of a team of diligent professionals trying to achieve the goals of the Center
  13. Adhere to all policies and procedures of the Center
  14. Perform other duties as assigned

Education

Degree: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a related field of study, such as English, writing, journalism, public relations, communications, marketing, digital media studies, design, or education, is required.

Skills

●     Demonstrated expertise with creating social media content

●     Ability to create compelling graphics, images, and video for social media and website

●     Demonstrated expertise creating press releases, press kits, fact sheets, media lists, and media pitches

●     Mastery of Associated Press (AP) style

●     Detail oriented with strong editorial, verbal, organizational, and time management skills

●     Excellent grammar, punctuation, and writing skills a must

●     Design skills required

●     Experience using Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Premiere Pro required; Canva experience a plus

●     Ability to master procedures quickly, set priorities, and work independently

●     Ability to meet deadlines and to multi-task

●     Ability to work in a fast-paced environment under deadline pressure

●     Must be able to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team

●     Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

●     Experience with content management systems, such as Joomla, a plus

●     Photo research experience a plus; familiarity with Creative Commons licensing a plus

Center for Civic Education staff are primarily working remotely with a number of employees in the office on an as-needed basis.
