Scientific Adventures for Girls (SAFG) is seeking an after school, full-time Head Teacher to engage elementary-aged girls and teach hands-on STEM activities in-person, at public schools in the East Bay (Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland, Richmond). A teaching credential is not required.

If you are passionate about helping shape our next generation of scientists and engineers - we’d love to have you! All classes are fun, hands-on and designed to inspire girls to love STEM!

We are looking for 3 full-time Head Teachers. This is an in-person, full-time, permanent position. The Head Teacher will report directly to the Manager of Programs. For an understanding about our after-school program, check-out what our classes look like: SAfG in Action! The position will start as soon as the post is filled.

We are looking to have teachers start in early June to teach our 5-week summer program before transitioning to teaching throughout the academic school year.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach/deliver project-based STEM activities on site at elementary schools in the East Bay (includes assembling and picking up SAFG provided kit supplies, and class set-up and cleanup).
  • Promote the SAFG mission and scientist’s mindset in each class (6 C’s: Curious, Committed, Confident, Careful, Creative and Changemakers).
  • Use SAFG-provided facilitator guides available for each class and differentiate instruction as needed to improve the student experience and accommodate individual students.
  • Integrate your understanding of the socio-economic and diverse backgrounds of the girls and social emotional learning skills into your instruction. (This is key to changing girls’ attitudes and the beliefs they form about STEM.)
  • Supervise and direct teaching assistant, role models and volunteers in the classroom.
  • Communicate weekly with parents and promote additional SAFG events and activities in the classroom.
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with school facilitators and coordinators.
  • Assist the organization with assembly of STEM supplies into kits (at SAFG’s main office and storage facility) and transport the STEM kits to school sites.
  • Be a collaborative SAFG team member - Attend all staff meetings and programmatic meetings as scheduled.
  • Teach at schools throughout the East Bay (Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland, Richmond and San Leandro).
  • Support other SAFG program-related projects as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completed Bachelor of Arts or Science degree. Degree in Education or in a STEM related field is a plus.
  • A minimum of one full year of experience teaching.
  • Experience teaching and building relationships with girls from underserved backgrounds is preferred. Experience working with communities of color is also preferred.
  • Be able to establish rapport with a wide range of students and create a comfortable, inclusive learning environment.
  • Be committed to educational equity and programming for girls.
  • Take initiative to analyze and solve problems.
  • Work collaboratively and effectively with an assistant and colleagues.
  • Maintain an excellent work ethic, possess a high level of energy and project enthusiasm.
  • Be efficiently organized and detail-oriented.
  • Have experience in emergent curriculum, project-based and inquiry-based learning (it’s a plus!)
  • Possess a valid driver's license and a reliable car.

Spanish is a plus, but not mandatory.

ABOUT US:
