What the Program Manager, Centennial Communications does
The Program Manager, Centennial Communications position is key in assisting AGU to promote discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity by being operational in focus. Using communications expertise and sound judgment, the Program Manager will be involved in a diverse portfolio of projects across the Centennial program, and as such, requires a communications generalist who possesses the combined skills of a writer, editor, facilitator, and project manager, and who is able to both exercise independent judgment and successfully work as part of an integrated team.
The incumbent will work with AGU members, internal staff, and external consultants and vendors to plan, develop and coordinate content that informs and engages AGU members, the media, public policy makers, the public, and other target audiences about the suite of Centennial programs. This work will involve extensive writing for a variety of channels, including social media, public outreach, and website management. The Program Manager will also work with AGU members and partner organizations – both inside and outside of the scientific community – to help coordinate independently-organized programs and activities related to AGU’s Centennial. This position repots to the Executive Office.
- 5+ years of experience with the Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or a related discipline; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Association experience is a strong plus; experience in a scientific or technical organization is strongly desired.
- Science background or experience working with scientists preferred.
- Experience or knowledge of scientific peer review process a strong plus.
- Works in conjunction with a broad array of stakeholders, including consultants and vendors, to plan, develop, and edit engaging, informative, and consistent content related to AGU’s Centennial for both internal and external audiences. This includes, but is not limited to, web and newsletter content, blog posts, social media posts, and scripts for videos; it also includes contributing to the development of marcomm plans for a variety of projects. As needed, it will also include directing others in developing and editing Centennial content designed to meet specific AGU program and audience needs.
- Provides communications counsel to staff throughout the organization, ensuring that all communication approaches are aligned with Centennial messaging and goals. This will include working independently and/or as part of a team to identify optimal delivery methods for content (text, video, social media, etc., or a combination of sources) and ensuring that content is integrated content across channels to maximize impact.
- Partners with and supports various AGU departments on their Centennial-related programming and projects. This includes outreach and engagement programs for AGU members and other Centennial partner organizations, special publications and scientific publishing, scientific meetings, and a permanent museum exhibit in the AGU headquarters building, among other efforts.
- Works within assigned budgets and deadlines.
- Updates the Centennial website and multiple social media platforms designed to showcase projects and their progress.
- Tracks audience engagement, including media coverage, and generates regular reports to help analyze and assess the effectiveness of a message, piece of content or program.

- Exceptional analytical, research, writing, organizational, project management, and communications skills. Should include experience with a variety of communications channels, including, websites, e-newsletters, and social media.
- Ability to effectively prioritize and work well under pressure to meet sensitive project deadlines.
- Ability to handle complex technical information and prioritize assignments, set goals, and work independently, as well as in a group.
- Ability to synthesize information from a variety of sources and develop clear, concise messages that support and contribute to the organization’s strategic goals.
- Solid interpersonal and teamwork skills, and experience in seeking input from across the organization and implementing plans in concert with other departments.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, both independently and as part of a team, in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment, as well as multi-task and set priorities in a flexible manner to address changing needs.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft suite of products, including Excel and Word. Must be able to learn and effectively use: a Web content management system (experience with WordPress preferred), and a variety of social media platforms, including but not limited to LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and YouTube.
- Ability to exercising highest level of discretion on both internal and external confidential matters.
- Demonstrated initiative and sound judgment.
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills is a must.
