About Philly Thrive

Through our organizing, Philly Thrive won the permanent closure of the PES oil refinery and an end to 154 years of pollution. Our current campaign contests for justice in the historic refinery site redevelopment – together we’re organizing to win a complete cleanup of the site and robust reinvestment in our neighborhoods. Philly Thrive also runs community support programs including a youth summer camp, a gun violence healing circle, a women’s support circle and a weekly food box delivery. We will continue to build people-power until everyone has a Right to Breathe, free from pollution, oppression, and a violent economy. Philly Thrive is a member-led organization and the staff support members in their leadership development while also back-ending key pieces of work. 

Job Description: 

Philly Thrive is looking for an experienced Co- Director to support sustainable organization- building and the stewardship of our rapidly growing organization. Philly Thrive has grown from three to nine staff in a short period of time and needs an experienced leader to support and develop staff to develop the leadership of members and make day-to-day decisions to move the organization forward. The Co-Director is responsible for ensuring the effectiveness and synergy of Philly Thrive’s base building, campaign and policy work, community support programs, staff accountability and supporting the ongoing development of the member-led Board. 

Core Responsibilities (in partnership with the other Co-Director) 

Organizational Development & Stewardship

• Ensure the organization holds strategic planning processes and sets reasonable multi-year goals
• Ensures staff are accountable to the strategic plan and support staff and members to make decisions together and work through disagreements- especially when there are competing priorities, new programs or need for additional funding
• Ensure the organization is growing in a sustainable way by supporting the development of new systems and practices that allow for growth while maintaining the integrity and intention of the organizing work
• Support volunteer Board members to understand and hold their two primary responsibilities of staff oversight and budget approval

Staff Supervision

• Build staff members’ organizational skills, including goal-setting, work plan development, and time management in order to effectively fulfill responsibilities and meet campaign needs
• Develop staff members’ leadership skills, including building leadership teams, designing meeting agendas, developing turnout plans, designing program plans, and assessing political conditions
• Hold staff members accountable to their position’s broad responsibilities, generated goals, and time commitment to the organization 
• Support improved systems of coordination between staff 
• Support staff to engage in skill-building opportunities outside the organization
• Develop a structure for Thrive volunteer members to evaluate staff’s work and for staff self-evaluations
• Provide regular reports to the Thrive board on staff members’ performance, growth, and challenges, as well as the approach the Director has taken to develop staff
• Generate annual reports on the organization’s functioning, structure and effectiveness 

Other Responsibilities

• Schedule and facilitate weekly staff meetings 
• As needed, support volunteer Board members to lead hiring processes, make hiring decisions and evaluate staff
• Support fundraising efforts as needed

Qualifications:

• 3+ years of experience supporting organizational development and sustainability, including supporting long-term planning and Board development
• Experience supervising a multi-racial staff and developing evaluation and accountability practices
• Self-directed, proactive
• Excitement about supporting a multi-racial, cross-class, leader-ful organization, strong commitment to environmental justice & Philly Thrive principles

The ideal candidate will also have experience organizing, specifically in base-building, campaign development and direct action tactics.
