Job Summary

The Communications Director, under the direct supervision of the Chief Defender, will develop and implement the strategy, design and functionality for all media relations, in coordination with the Policy Director, that will cultivate and communicate the Defender mission and brand. Functioning as both a liaison, coordinating a network of internal and external communications, and as content creator, the Communications Director, will manage all tasks that are related to the development and implementation of a robust, multi-faceted communications platform. The Communications Director will work closely with senior leadership to develop communication platforms for strategic initiatives that emphasize the “big picture”, while providing guidance and direction for tactical execution and implementation. 

Major Areas of Responsibility


  • Establish reporting methods to evaluate strategies and programs and measure impact of communications
  • Identify, develop and participate in strategic planning activities, monitor and report on progress toward goals and objectives and apply relevant approaches from best practice frameworks


  • Develop and implement a thorough communications plan, both internal and external, along with a plan for tracking success
  • Foster strong working relationships with the Press, draft press releases, and respond promptly and substantively to media inquiries
  • Proactively highlight Defender programs and create media opportunities to amplify the Association’s work
  • Collaborate with the Chief Defender and Policy Director to develop talking points for media appearances by leadership or other staff
  • Develop communications messaging that will create momentum and awareness as well as measure the effectiveness of communications activities
  • Develop, distribute and maintain all print and electronic material including, but not limited to newsletters, brochures and content on the Association’s website
  • Maintain the Association’s webpage, ensuring that the information shared on the Defender webpage is current and consistent (i.e. articles, events) and are posted and updated regularly
  • Oversee the content on the Association’s social media presence on social media websites (i.e. Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter) and ensure it communicates Defender initiatives and programs to social media audiences
  • Craft and disseminate, intra-office communications and releases        



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing or a related field of study, Master’s Degree preferred


  • 5 years of relevant experience
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, ability to create persuasive messaging
  • High energy, maturity and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and elevate the importance of communications
  • Highly collaborative style with experience developing and implementing strategic communications plans
  • Strong organizational and project-management skills, and a track record of careful and conscientious attention to detail and completion of projects on deadline
  • Demonstrated ability to respect and appreciate diversity of backgrounds and experiences
  • Commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including clients, staff, volunteers, program participants and other supporters and stakeholders
  • Ability to maintain confidential information
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
