Position Description

Legal Services of the Hudson Valley (LSHV) has an immediate opening in our Yonkers office for a full-time staff attorney to work on matters related to economic justice. Creditors – including but not limited to - credit card issuing banks, debt buyers, former landlords, medical facilities – bring high volumes of civil cases against low-income New Yorkers.  Duties of the Position: The duties include intake and individual case work, litigation in state and federal courts, including appellate practice, and education and outreach efforts directed at community members and service providers. Individual case work will include both full representation for certain types of cases (for example complex rent arrears cases, cases with an intersection to economic abuse in a DV context) and coordination with volunteers to provide limited scope representation or brief service in cases throughout our service area. The person hired will also be expected to adhere to program and case handling standards, funder requirements, the highest professional standards, and be available as a resource to LSHV staff and access to justice communities.

Qualifications

·        Member in good standing of the New York State Bar; or out of state admission with eligibility and willingness to be admitted in NYS.

·        Two or more years of legal experience, including litigation, or its equivalent.

·        Excellent people skills.

·        Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred

·        Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of stakeholders.

·        Experience litigating housing cases and civil cases in city and Supreme courts in New York.

·        Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income persons with prior experience in legal services or similar program.

·        English/Spanish bilingual.

Salary: DOE, union scale, with excellent benefits. After a brief probationary period, this position may permit work from home up to two days per week.
