Substance Misuse Prevention VISTA

Be a part of the solution in preventing substance misuse - join the Afterschool Alliance and the West Virginia Statewide Afterschool Network as a Substance Misuse Prevention VISTA. This position is based in Charleston, WV and will support the West Virginia Statewide Afterschool Network in elevating the benefits of afterschool programs as part of the solution to the substance misuse crisis. Afterschool programs provide protective factors such as mentorship, caring adults, and the opportunity for children to develop a sense of agency that can prevent them from engaging in risky behaviors, including substance misuse.

The Substance Misuse Prevention VISTA will support this mission through:

• Conducting asset mapping to assess the landscape of afterschool in WV and identify gaps and needs of programs to support youth in the substance misuse crisis
• Connecting afterschool programs with local and statewide efforts addressing social and emotional learning (SEL) and substance misuse
• Supporting statewide communication and outreach by writing content, briefs, and newsletters and disseminating resources, best practices, and trainings to programs
