Make the Road New York (MRNY) builds the power of Latino and working class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. Make the Road New York operates neighborhood-based community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; Brentwood, Long Island and White Plains, Westchester. With a membership of 22,000+ low-income New Yorkers, MRNY tackles the critical issues facing our community: workplace justice, tenants’ rights, immigrant civil rights, language-access, LGBTQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform.

 

MRNY is a multi-service organization. Our Education Department offers English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Spanish-language literacy, computer literacy, citizenship preparation and in-school and after-school youth programs. Our Community Organizing Projects help New Yorkers to implement strategies to combat shared problems, and develop leadership and the capacity for civic participation. And our Departments of Legal, Health & Support Services provides direct legal representation, case management, and facilitated enrollment into public health insurance programs, training, and strategic support for members and organizing campaigns. Our attorneys and advocates specialize in labor and employment law, public benefits, disability benefits, housing law, healthcare and health insurance access, immigration, public education, domestic violence, and LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer) civil rights issues.

 

 

CURRENT OPENING:

Make the Road New York seeks a Long Island Lead Organizer to advance its Long Island issue-based and electoral organizing. The Long Island Lead Organizer will be responsible for overseeing all of Make the Road New York’s adult organizing work on Long Island, including:

 

  • Support campaigns on workplace justice, fair housing, and immigration campaigns at the local, county, state, and federal level;
  • Building and sustaining coalition efforts on these campaigns;
  • Organizing and facilitating meetings with key coalition partners and stakeholders;
  • Supervising a team of 2-3 organizers on these campaigns;
  • Leading civic engagement initiatives, including, but not limited to, voter registration efforts and overseeing a Get Out the Vote effort;
  •   Overseeing all of the organization’s electoral work on Long Island;
  • Overseeing fundraising and funder relationships for Make the Road New York on Long Island;
  •  Representing Make the Road New York at the Long Island Civic Engagement Table;
  •  Leading engagement with, and building relationships with, elected officials;
  •   Leading Long Island organizing team meetings;
  • Participating in team meetings at locations throughout Long Island and New York City;
  • Developing training and outreach materials for trainings, events, and non-partisan electoral work (e.g., door-hangers, mailings) with our Director of Civic Engagement & Research;

 

The successful candidate must:

  •   Have at least 3 years of experience of community organizing, labor organizing, and/or immigrant rights work;
  •   Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Show a commitment to social justice;
  •  Be fully bilingual in English and Spanish;
  • Be open to working some evenings and weekends;
  • Be willing to travel throughout Long Island;
  • Proven ability to lead winning campaigns;
  • At least two years of supervision or lead organizer experience; and
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills with an emphasis on navigating coalition dynamics, supporting member/worker leadership, and supervising staff.


Make the Road New York is a multi-faceted organization, and this position requires flexibility, a positive attitude, and hustle. This is a full-time position. The salary is competitive and will depend on relevant work experience and education. Excellent benefits are provided.
