The Purpose

Our Mission: Strengthen youth, inspire families, and build communities that reach their potential.

Our Vision: Create access to a fair learning and playing field for Portland’s most underserved youth.

The Opportunity

As a Youth and Family Social Worker (referred to as a “Social Worker”) at Portland Tennis and Education (“PT&E”), you have the opportunity to support K-12 students (referred to as “Scholar Athletes”) and their families in North Portland. This part-time role is critical to ensuring the ~75 Scholar Athletes in PT&E’s K-12 programs have the necessary support and resources to learn, grow, and thrive individually and within their communities.

The PT&E Social Worker’s ultimate goal is to enable Scholar Athletes to thrive by serving as a link between Scholar Athletes, families, schools, and the teams who execute PT&E’s after school and summer programs. Activities include working one-on-one with Scholar Athletes who would benefit from more focused support, advocating for the unique needs of each Scholar Athlete, partnering with PT&E’s Family Lead to support families, and leading implementation of program-wide practices that enable youth to thrive now and in the future.

The PT&E Social Worker may also have the opportunity to grow into a more comprehensive, senior-level role through leadership activities such as driving adoption of a program-wide K-8 socioemotional framework, providing family therapy, and / or designing a new, postsecondary advising program for high school students seeking continuing education or work skills training.

Your Role

  • Engage one-on-one with Scholar Athletes who would benefit from more focused support, (whether in one-off circumstances or on an ongoing basis) in school, at home, and / or within PT&E’s after school and summer program
  • Identify and serve as an advocate for the unique needs of each Scholar Athlete and his/her/their family
  • Partner with PT&E Family Lead and PT&E Youth Lead to identify and share critical resources that benefit youth and families
  • Lead development of and train program staff to support program-wide practices that most effectively enable youth to thrive now and in the future (e.g., developmentally-appropriate behavior management structures, mental health support systems, and staff training on youth socioemotional development)
  • Participate in meetings and complete all required tracking and reporting processes necessary to uphold program’s commitment to meaningful data collection and evaluation methods
  • Assist with program-related events and activities that benefit Scholar Athletes, including fundraisers, one-day youth programs, and more
  • Additional administrative support as needed (e.g., ongoing report compilation, contacting families regarding program opportunities and reminders, academic report card collection, review, and theme identification)
  • The Social Worker role is currently part-time (20 hr / wk) and reports directly to the Program Director, who is committed to meaningfully mentoring and guiding the Social Worker as they grow, learn, and work to reach near-term and long-term career goals

As a successful candidate, you have:

  • A positive, proactive, team-focused, growth-oriented mindset
  • An unwavering commitment to going above and beyond in support of enabling youth to thrive
  • Experience working in a social work environment with children, youth, and families from marginalized communities and / or those who have experienced trauma
  • Experience working with students from diverse cultural, academic, and economic backgrounds
  • Spanish language skills
  • At least four (4) years work experience of any kind and at least one year pursuing an advanced degree in Social Work (MSW) and / or pursuing LCSW, CSWA, or equivalent licensure in Social Work
  • A keen sense of judgment; ability to make sound decisions and provide guidance to others in moments of uncertainty
  • Ability and desire to build rapport with program partners beyond Scholar Athletes, families, and staff, including but not limited to: volunteers, Board of Directors, and program supporters
  • Basic proficiency and comfort utilizing Microsoft Office, Google Drive, and Zoom
  • The ability to work a minimum of 20 hours per week
  • Access to transportation to and within North Portland
  • A spirit of flexibility and willingness to pivot between in-person and online programming in keeping with COVID-19 protocols and Oregon Health Authority regulations

As a successful candidate, you may have (not required):

  • A completed Masters in Social Work and / or a license or certificate in clinical social work
  • Individual and / or family therapy experience
  • Expertise in youth mental health, socioemotional curriculum development, IEP development / implementation, ACEs, and / or PBIS programs
  • Interest in or experience playing the game of tennis
  • An interest in growing into a more senior-level, full-time (40 hr / wk) position with further oversight and relevant administrative responsibilities based on your skills, interests, development goals, and the needs of our growing program
  • A history of / interest in attending external trainings to expand your skill set and bring best practice research to the PT&E team
