Jazz Night School (JNS) is a Seattle nonprofit that uplifts lives through educational experiences for aspiring musicians—instrumentalists and vocalists—of any age or ability level. Founded in 2008, JNS is the region's largest jazz education program and is accessible to everyone, with tuition assistance provided to all in need. JNS takes pride in ensuring the best possible environment for our life-long learners to experience growth and empowerment through their music studies. JNS affirms and honors the Black American originators of jazz with profound gratitude and respect. JNS seeks to honor their legacy by staying true to the spirit of the music, and also by reflecting on what we the musicians and community of JNS can do to help dismantle the structures of White supremacy and heal its wounds. Jazz Night School is a community nonprofit, both serving and made possible by students and dedicated supporters. JNS is at an exciting and critical stage of organizational evolution, progressing toward sustainability, and ready to add strong development expertise to its leadership team. With nearing 1,000 seats filled a year JNS is growing in the face of COVID-19 and have successfully pivoted to online programming that can reach even more learners.
The Development Director is a part time position, working with the Executive Director, staff, and Board to direct and execute fundraising efforts. With expertise, drive, and enthusiasm for our mission, the Development Director will play an integral role in Jazz Night School's future by providing the leadership needed to transform current processes and resources into sustainable systems and forces for funding the ongoing and future operational, tuition assistance, and capital needs of the organization. Currently led by JNS Executive Director and Operations Manager, fundraising accounts for 36% of our $350K annual income, and operating budgets are rising yearly.
The Development Director, utilizing best practices, will be responsible for:
> Setting fundraising goals in collaboration with the Executive Director and JNS Board Executive Committee.
> Cultivating the JNS Board's fundraising skills, directing board fundraising efforts, attending Board meetings, and serving as lead staff for the Board of Directors' standing Development Committee.
> Significantly growing the JNS donor community and annual contributed income.
> Leadership, execution, and success of JNS fundraising programs (gala, capital campaign, sustained giving, sponsorships).
> Management of fundraising program timelines and standardized reporting of key metrics.
> Possessing a clear understanding of Jazz Night School's programs and funding priorities.
> Building or introducing relationships with community influencers to advance the mission and fundraising goals of the organization.
> Developing fundraising messaging and high quality JNS brand materials for engaging new and existing donors.
>Grant applications and processing.
The ideal candidate will have 10+ years nonprofit experience with proven fundraising success meeting annual goals in excess of $250,000 and will bring positive energy, creative thinking, and strategic planning skills to build a strong, diverse fundraising base. JNS is looking for candidates with the capacity and desire to grow development programs and achieve goals of sustainability. This position may be ideal for veteran or semi-retired development professionals interested in the challenge of making a big difference with a small and growing community arts nonprofit. Candidates should be able to:
> Articulate a compelling case for giving within a low-profile sector.
> Inspire and influence nonprofit boards, and have experience successfully managing people and programs toward success.
> Interact with all levels of community and partners.
> Serve as a brand ambassador for the organization.
> Possess outstanding interpersonal and strategic skills, strong public speaking and presentation skills, excellent organizational skills, self-motivation, attention to detail, trustworthiness, integrity, and work ethic.
> Suggest and implement solutions based upon evidence and best practice and weigh limitations of resources and staff when considering ideas.
Hourly wage based on $80K-$95K salary range depending on qualifications and experience.
10-20 hrs/wk Monday to Friday to be negotiated in interview and hire. Occasional work on weekends and evenings as needed. Work can be mostly remote.
