Job Objective  

The Director is responsible for the educational life of One Fifty Parker Avenue School and  is the primary guardian of the School’s play-based philosophy. The Director ensures that all  School operations run smoothly and embodies passion and commitment to the School’s  community and play-based philosophy.  

Main Duties and Responsibilities  

1. Clearly and persuasively articulate the philosophy and mission of the School to parents,  teachers, the Board of Directors and the wider community.  

  • Represent the School with professional agencies, other schools and at professional  conferences.  

2. Take the lead in implementing the School's developmental philosophy through oversight of  the curriculum. 

  • Possess true passion, understanding and belief in play-based education, while acting as  an enthusiastic advocate, sharing this devotion and dedication with others.
  • Support staff in developing curricula that reflect our commitment to play-based  philosophy and are developmentally appropriate.  
  • Become familiar with the development of each child in the School through observation and hands-on classroom involvement.  
  • Assess and discuss with teachers the social, cognitive, physical and emotional progress of each child.  
  • Refer families to educational, medical or mental health professionals when warranted. 
  • Be responsible for children’s physical and emotional safety.  

3. Manage a professional teaching staff of 14 adults.  

  • Attend each program’s team meeting once a month to discuss classroom issues and  strategies. 
  • Conduct monthly leadership meetings for Head Teachers to discuss leadership,  management and professional development.  
  • Conduct weekly all-staff meetings to discuss policy, upcoming events, planning and  School philosophy. 
  • Encourage, initiate and implement professional development through participation in  various workshops and symposia, as well as through the sharing of new ideas and  professional materials.  
  • Monitor performance of teachers and provide formal guidance to Head Teachers, with  verbal evaluation in November and written evaluation in April. Give informal feedback  on performance when requested or warranted. File summaries of feedback for every teacher in staff files annually.  
  • Negotiate all salaries and create teacher agreements, while keeping within budgeted  personnel costs. 
  • Recruit, interview, hire and terminate as required.  
  • Supervise orientation of all new staff members regarding general safety, as well as  Parker philosophies, policies and procedures.  
  • Maintain personnel files with hiring documentation, reviews and any other annually or  sporadically collected documents. 

4. Recruit, Screen and Admit New Families.  

  • Actively recruit applicants from a wide range of economic, ethnic, cultural and family  backgrounds, identifying and recruiting families that will enhance the Parker  community.  
  • Personally attend and assure the School is well-represented at preschool fairs, with  teachers and family volunteers. 
  • Run an admissions process that actively promotes Parker’s philosophy.  
  • Make admissions recommendations to the Admissions Committee, composed of Head  Teachers and the Director. 
  • Inform potential and current families about Parker’s Tuition Assistance Program for  qualifying families.  
  • Inform accepted families of placement at Parker and tuition assistance, if applicable.
  • Facilitate and encourage the participation of new families in the School. 

5. Help parents navigate the elementary school admissions process at public, parochial and  independent elementary schools in and around San Francisco.  

  • Conduct an annual information meeting for families on the kindergarten admissions  process at the various types of elementary schools in and around San Francisco, with  information about both public and private schools.  
  • Work with each family to develop a plan that best meets their goals addressing  philosophical and curricular options, as well as kindergarten readiness.  
  • Oversee the accuracy, comprehensiveness and timely submission of elementary school  applicants’ evaluations by teaching teams.  
  • Create a schedule of one-on-one meetings for families before they submit applications  and again when they receive admissions letters.  

6. Ensure current families are kept informed and involved with their children’s education and  community activities.  

  • Oversee planning of and take an active role in the Community Workshop Series, which  includes 3-4 educational nights on a variety of relevant child development topics. 
  • Support and assist family volunteers in their fundraising efforts and support of the School, teachers and programs.  
  • Annually appoint the Parent Group President, in conjunction with the Board. 
  • Attend a sampling of the parent-teacher conferences in October and May. 
  • Produce a weekly blog post and edit and publish blog posts of all programs.  

7. Administration  

  • Maintain knowledge of relevant Title 22 licensing requirements, and ensure that the  School follows all licensing requirements for preschools. 
  • Manage insurance policies, workman’s comp, disability claims, etc. as needed.
  • Administer the Little Red School Bus (LRSB) Program per the LRSB Manual, including, but not limited to, drivers’ training and licensing, as well as bus registration,  maintenance and inspections.  
  • Oversee maintenance and improvements of School property for safety and repairs.  Solicit multiple bids for all necessary work. Maintain related files. 
  • Be aware of any allergies, unusual circumstances or health needs; create plans and notify  staff accordingly.  

8. Human Resources Management 

  • Define, refine, and document financial, human resources, and operational procedures.  Utilize the support of an HR consultant, bookkeeper or educational attorney, as needed.
  • Review, manage and renew benefits and HR policies with support of benefits consultants  and bookkeeper.  
  • Manage regular and accurate updates of Staff Handbook. 
  • Keep the Board informed of staff compensation and benefits to ensure they are  competitive with those of similar preschools.  
  • Hire an adequate group of substitute teachers for on-call needs when teachers are sick or  take PTO. Be ready to substitute yourself when needed.  
  • Oversee cleaning crew.  

9. Financial Oversight  

  • Work with the Board Treasurer to maintain fiscal responsibility in all areas of the  School. 
  • Review all financial reports with the Board of Directors.  
  • Produce annual budget in conjunction with the Board Finance Committee. 
  • Manage investment accounts as needed in conjunction with the Board Finance  Committee. 
  • Write family contracts each year and execute subsequent family billing.  

10. Participate in the governance of the School through regular Board meetings. 

  • Prepare and present the Director's report for all Board meetings. 
  • Participate in other Board Committees, as necessary. 
Qualifications:  

Parker School is looking for a Director that possesses the following qualifications. 

  • Strong background in early childhood education, with both hands-on teaching  experience and knowledge of best practices. 
  • Proven track record of successfully leading and managing a team of individuals. 
  • Experience recruiting, selecting and enrolling students and families that support a  mission-driven educational institution.  
  • Demonstrated success in structuring an organization, including financial and operational  experience. 
  • Effective communication and listening skills.  
  • Problem-solving skills; someone who is a proactive and thoughtful team player,  experienced in responding to a wide variety of viewpoints and synthesizing ideas to  develop an action plan.

The following tasks shall be managed by the Director, although at times may be managed in  conjunction with an assistant and/or bookkeeper. (Parker’s newly appointed Director will be  involved in the recruiting process for an Assistant Director or in-house Bookkeeper, if  necessary.) 

1. Financial Management 

  • Manage and reconcile accounts payable and accounts receivable in QuickBooks. ● Produce monthly financial reports, including profit and loss, balance sheet and budget to  actual. 
  • Keep family accounts current; provide account information to parents upon request.
  • Manage fundraising record keeping for individual donors.  

2. Human Resources Management  

  • Keep staff updated about HR issues and deadlines.  
  • Track staff paid time off, according to City of San Francisco Paid Sick Leave Policy.  

3. Compliance  

  • Prepare and file forms for School’s compliance with all state and federal regulations. 
  • Ensure that children’s files are maintained as per licensing expectations, including  meeting all health and immunization requirements. 
  • Oversee all communication and work necessary to stay compliant with Preschool For  All. Share information with families as they become eligible.
