POSITION OVERVIEW

Reporting to and working closely with the Executive Director, the Development Director leads the Development Team, which includes the Grants Manager and the Development Associate, to engage individual and institutional funders in supporting the work of Mamatoto Village. The Development Director also provides staff support to the Mamatoto Village Board of Directors.  

This position is both strategic and tactical, as it is responsible for updating, managing, and executing the Mamatoto annual development plan. The ideal candidate has a clear grasp of all core components of development, with particularly strong experience in individual giving, including major gifts, stewardship, and annual giving campaigns (direct mail and digital). This role requires experience with development operations, including CRM management and budget-building. The Development Director will interface frequently with donors, will be the primary steward for individual donors and foundation funders, partnering with the Executive Director developing relationships with major funders.

ATTRIBUTES OF COMPETITIVE CANDIDATES

Competitive candidates will have at least 8-10 years of nonprofit development experience and enjoy working on small teams whose members all wear many hats. They must be considerate listeners and believe everyone has an important story to tell. They must readily connect the dots between fundraising, communications, and programs, and they must inspire their colleagues to see those connections as well. They must appreciate structure and systems and believe they make the work easier and better. They must value anecdotes and numbers in equal measure.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership and Development Strategy 

  • Contribute positively to organizational culture and reflect Mamatoto’s values
  • Manage and execute the Mamatoto development and stewardship plans to achieve annual revenue goals
  • Update existing development and stewardship plans with new ideas, industry best practices, and data-driven analysis
  • Ensure a robust gift pipeline big enough to hit annual revenue goals by actively managing prospective and current individual and corporate funders and working with the Grants Manager on the foundation pipeline  
  • Oversee preparation, execution, and follow-up for fundraising topics at board meetings, and serve as the staff leader and liaison to the Board of Directors in their fundraising efforts 
  • Monitor and report regularly on the progress of the development plan, provide actionable analysis for the Executive Director and Board of Directors 
  • Identify suspected revenue gaps and develop tactics to generate new leads
  • Supervise the Grants Manager and Development Associate

Fundraising and Donor Relations 

  • Working closely with the Board and Executive Director, build Mamatoto’s major gifts program, especially in support of the 2021 Capital Campaign 
  • Research and design the moves management plans for all major donors/funders and support the Executive Director in the execution of those plans 
  • Energetically and proactively cultivate and nurture relationships between Mamatoto’s donors and donor prospects, Board members, volunteers, and other key constituents
  • Manage and develop existing initiatives, appeals, and campaigns focused on targeting new donors and stewarding existing donors
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all mid-sized and major donors 
  • Work with the Communications Manager to develop creative and mission-focused fundraising messaging that effectively articulates the special role of Mamatoto Village in the field of perinatal care, as well as its impact on the community
  • Prepare all donor cultivation and solicitation materials by adapting messaging as needed relative to donors’ particular interests and specific history with Mamatoto Village
  • Project manage the Executive Director’s (ED) fundraising work, directing where and how best to spend her time and efforts on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis 

Foundation Funding 

  • Work with the Grants Manager to ensure Mamatoto has a robust pipeline of local, regional, and national grant opportunities to pursue 
  • Assist the Grants Manager and Executive Director in building personal relationships with foundation funders 

Manage Development Operations and Revenue Tracking 

  • Establish and monitor annual and long-term revenue goals and budgets
  • Design a regular progress-to-goal report and development dashboard for the Executive Director and work with the Development Associate on regular updates
  • Spearhead development-focused data input and ensure accuracy in all records and development reports in the organization’s CRM (Little Green Light) 
  • Work closely with Development Associate to ensure data integrity 

Oversee Consistent and Creative Donor Stewardship 

  • In partnership with the Development Associate, manage the execution of Mamatoto’s donor stewardship plan
  • Think creatively about the donor stewardship plan and update it annually with new and meaningful ways to connect donors and foster a sense of community
  • Collaborate with the Communications Manager on the optimal design and content for a donor-focused annual report


SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS TO FOSTER SUCCESS

  • A Bachelor’s degree and 8-10 years of nonprofit development experience
  • Strong familiarity with human rights, reproductive justice, and/or maternal and infant health content
  • Experience working from, and preferably writing, a development plan
  • Demonstrable experience in major gift fundraising, with hands-on practice at foundation relations, direct mail, and online annual giving campaigns
  • Enthusiasm to propose fresh ideas without prompting by leadership, openness to feedback on those ideas, and persistence to bring those ideas to life
  • Experience with donor CRMs
  • High level of skill with iOS and MS Office software
  • Must be able to work with sensitive and protected information in a confidential manner
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication
  • Willingness to engage in continuous learning and training
