About The Family Place

The Family Place (TFP) (www.thefamilyplacedc.org) has helped promote stability and well-being for low-income families in Washington DC for 40 years by offering them education, critical resources, and social support. Most of our clients are mothers with young children under the age of five. The Family Place provides classes and services to families in a welcoming, multi-cultural environment at no cost to them. Our programs help meet emergency needs, provide education and training, and offer access to information and other social services. We put the needs of our clients first by striving to develop programming that is both relevant and practical.


Position summary

The Family Place is seeking a self-motivated organizational leader with significant experience in early childhood education and a strong commitment to serving low-income families. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Director of Early Learning is a member of The Family Place Management Team and is responsible for leading The Family Place’s programs in early childhood education and home visiting. The right candidate must demonstrate excellent skills in verbal and written communication, organization, and leadership.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:


Early Learning Support Services and School-Age Programs

·      Develops and maintains a strategic vision for the early learning program.

·      Manages and supervises the Early Childhood Team and School-Age programs and ensures compliance with TFP policies and health and safety practices.

·      Produces and maintains written program policies and procedures for families, staff, and supervisors.

·      Develops program plans and leads the implementation of all early school-age childhood and Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) program.

·      Contributes to annual internal and external reporting on the programs.

·      Reviews and maintains current teaching best practices; ensures all educators are trained and capable of developing and implementing a superior early childhood program.


Management Team and Administration

·      Collaborates with other Management Team members to ensure the smooth operation of TFP programs.

·      Develops and maintains program reports and evaluations as requested.

·      Serves as a resource and leader to all personnel.

·      Ensures proper orientation of all new hires and creates and communicates current staff performance evaluations.

·      Serves as a liaison with outside partner organizations, collaborating to plan and advance The Family Place DC initiatives.

·      Serves on committees and represents the organization and in community outreach efforts as appropriate.

·      Supports TFP’s mission by assisting with special projects and strategic initiatives as assigned by the Executive Director.


Brief Services

·      Provides emergency and brief services to families maintaining all physical and electronic files of services; this includes donations and other brief case management support.

·      Maintains records of services for reporting as needed. 

·      Assists with diapers/clothing drives and donations, including set up and cleaning teams.


Qualifications and Skills Required

·      Bachelor’s in Early Childhood Development or Education; or Bachelor’s in a related field with a valid Child Development Associate (CDA) degree.

·      At least three years of relevant work experience.

·      Al least one year of management or supervisory experience.

·      Must be bilingual (able to read/write in English and Spanish).

·      Experience working with children of low-income families.

·      Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite & Google Apps.

·      Knowledge of Quickbase is a plus.

·      Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
