Purpose:

WomenHeart is looking to hire a consultant to conceptualize new volunteer-led programming, establish a monitoring and evaluation system for those and related programs, and advise the organization on hybrid programming for those and similar programs.

Organizational Background:

Since 1999, WomenHeart has been the nation’s only patient-centered organization solely devoted to advancing women’s heart health through patient support, community education, and advocacy. WomenHeart is a community of women heart patients and their families, healthcare professionals, and health advocates from across the country, all committed to helping women live longer, healthier lives.

Programmatic Background:

Since 2002, WomenHeart has trained women heart patients to become volunteers who lead peer support groups for other women with heart disease, conduct community outreach and education, and engage in advocacy efforts. These volunteers, known as WomenHeart Champions, implement this programming at the local level with the support of WomenHeart.

WomenHeart Support Networks are an essential component of this work. These support groups provide women heart patients the space to connect with others like themselves and combat the feelings of isolation and loneliness associated with a heart disease diagnosis. In supporting this work, WomenHeart provides all Champions with resources and tools to help facilitate these meetings and educational engagements.

In 2022, WomenHeart conducted a survey to better understand the educational preferences and support needs of women with and at risk of heart disease. We are looking to create new outreach programs, tools and resources for Champions, informed by the results of this survey. At the same time, WomenHeart would like to establish more effective methods of monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of these community-based programs.

Scope of Work:

These are among the tasks we would like the consultant to perform:

1. Conceptualize new community-based, volunteer-led programs for women with and at risk of heart disease that address the key areas of unmet need.

  • These key areas, informed by the 2022 WomenHeart survey of the areas women want more information about, include but are not limited to heart-healthy lifestyle, stress management, weight management, and diabetes and heart disease.
  • The programs should be evidence-based or evidence-informed. They should include goals and objectives and a process of measuring and evaluating against those objectives.
  • Some of these programs can be tailored to specific subgroups or communities of women based on demographics, findings from the survey (i.e., tailored to women under 50, or women in rural communities, etc.), and who is most impacted by heart disease.
  • Create toolkits for volunteers that support their efforts in running the programs.
  • Provide training for the volunteers on running the programs.

2. Help create or establish a monitoring and evaluation system for the organization’s existing peer-led support programming.

  • These include support groups and one-on-one peer support for women with heart disease.

3. Serve as an advisor to WomenHeart staff on how to conceptualize support groups in a post pandemic, hybrid/ online context.

Expertise:

These are the desired skills and experience:

  • An expertise in public health, with a deep understanding of community-health programming, such as REACH (the CDC’s Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health).
  • An expertise in health equity, diversity and inclusion a plus.
  • Experience working in racially/ ethnically diverse communities and an understanding of how to design programs that are culturally competent and effective.
