LOCATION: Oakland, CA (travel and remote work will be required)

STATUS: Full-Time (non-standard hours)

REPORTS TO: JYCA Advisory Board 

SALARY: $75,000 - $90,000

We are hiring an Executive Director! 

In the Executive Director role, you will have responsibility for JYCA’s strategy, systems and overall functioning and for ensuring that JYCA programs align with our values of justice, belonging, and equity. You will partner with the Board and other key leaders and will be responsible for developing and implementing next-level  policies and systems for staff and program accountability, financial stability and impact. The mandate for this position is “Go for it”.

This is a large role,  and one with considerable opportunity! You’ll get to shape a cornerstone of Jewish life for youth in the East Bay and Peninsula, influence how Jewish communities organize for social and environmental justice, and form empowering relationships with emerging Jewish leaders. You also will have organizational support for your professional development, and a powerful intergenerational network of JYCA supporters, alums, and families eager to help you and JYCA succeed.

About Us

Jewish Youth for Community Action is a fiscally sponsored non-profit that engages Jewish youth in movements for social justice by creating a joyous, multiracial community where young people develop innovative leadership and organizing skills, facilitate socio-political learning, and run action campaigns. 

 We center youth in all aspects of our organization— youth hire staff, facilitate our programs, organize our campaigns, and work with us. Our organization is built, and run, in collaboration with the youth in the program and the supporting adults in our community. 

We’ve been around for 26 years and honor the work that’s come before us, while refining our vision and strategy to focus on building youth power through organizing, racial justice and financial sustainability. We’re  in a growth phase and many of our systems  need to be reconceived for increased capacity and capability as we grow. 

Core job responsibilities:

Overseeing Internal Systems

The ED is directly responsible for:

  • Building and maintaining accountability systems for programs, staff, and funders.
  • Leading annual planning and goal setting in collaboration with staff, board, and JYCA youth, including:
  • Project Management
  • Program Evaluation
  • Facilitating strategic planning along with creation and implementation of structures to operationalize strategic plan including:
  • Board/Staff Relationship, evolving roles and responsibilities
  • Staffing model, programmatic prioritization, and budget
  • New revenue models and organizational funding under an equity framework


The ED will collaborate to ensure continuity and consistency in the following functions, utilizing personal expertise, paired with staff or contract resources::

  • Financial (in collaboration with our fiscal sponsor) to cross-check and validate)
  • Leading annual budget creation
  • Developing and updating financial projections/cash flow monitoring 
  • Maintaining the operational budget 
  • Liaising with fiscal sponsor, bookkeeper, and other service providers
  • Fundraising
  • Manage contractors or staff to meet and exceed fundraising goals
  • Sustain and grow major funder relationships, cultivate new relationships
  • Ensuring  grant reporting requirements are fulfilled on time
  • Ensure annual development plan is created and that implementation is consistent with the staff model, budget and work expectations of program staff
  •  Program Support 
  • Guide  program alignment with strategy 
  • Ensure staff is trained and able to deliver program content and achieve desired outcomes
  • Community Engagement
  • Ensure relationships with families are sustained and deepened
  • Build and maintain relationships with key external partners and stakeholders to offer information, seek collaborative partners, and facilitate support of the program and the campaigns JYCA is working toward
  • Administrative systems 
  • Salesforce system creation and training
  • Lead hiring initiatives
  • Update employee policies to comply with federal, state and local regulations and maintain a current employee handbook
  • Conduct regular staff evaluations
  • Provide direct supervision and coaching to staff, which could include program, operations and/or fund development staff

You have the energy and skillset to lead our teams, develop internal systems and continually refresh JYCA’s connection to its strategic vision in order to strengthen our work.

Required Skills, Experiences and Qualities:

  • Strong track record delivering superior results and assuming leadership roles with minimal direction and oversight
  • Deep commitment to and passion for JYCA’s purpose and vision for racial, economic, climate and gender justice 
  • Skilled at adaptively supervising multiracial, multicultural teams with competence across multiple lines of difference
  • Effective at making rapid organizational pivots with creativity and coordination
  • Command of operational systems and processes, such as departmental or strategic planning and project management
  • Demonstrate and model personality traits including: transparency, directness, kindness, and personal accountability
  • Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships with a variety of stakeholders including funders, organizers, parents, board members, and teens; capable in navigation of a variety of professional settings with tact and confidence, including those were JYCA is a subordinate influencer 
  • Demonstrated track record of political/community organizing with notable results

BONUS Skills And Experience:

  • 5 years experience managing teams at a nonprofit organization, foundation, or collectively- run organization
  • Deep knowledge of Jewish ritual, Jewish culture and/or analysis of antisemitism
  • Networks in the Peninsula Jewish community
  • Ability to teach tools and practices to others to increase efficiency, especially relating to technology
  • Experience leading participatory budgeting efforts
  • Incredible organizational skills and ability to track details

The salary range for this position is $75,000 - $90,000 depending on prior experience.
