Leadership Greater Washington (LGW) seeks a Development Manager to support and grow its fundraising initiatives. LGW is a nonprofit established in 1986 with the mission to bring leaders together to make a positive community impact in the Washington Metropolitan region. The Development Manager leads the organization’s major fundraising initiatives including the annual awards dinner, corporate sponsorships, and grants. They manage development operations, create actionable development plans, and find creative ways to steward donors. They partner with the Development Committee to conceive new ideas and fundraising opportunities through creative prospect research, compelling campaigns, unique sponsorship packages, and major gift solicitations. They work closely with the CEO and Board Chair to engage the board in fundraising opportunities.

The successful candidate will have passion for making a difference in the greater Washington region, excellent interpersonal skills, and communicates LGW’s mission with clarity. They will bring expert organizational and administrative skills to ensure a functional and sustainable development operation. They will be an eager ambassador for the organization, forging new relationships to build LGW’s visibility and financial resources. They will understand how to raise LGW’s influence and visibility, while also deepening member engagement and leveraging their investments in the organization’s mission, programs, and partnerships. 

The Development Manager reports to the Chief Operating Officer and has a consultative relationship with the Chief Executive Officer, Board Chair, and the Board’s Development Committee. This position has no direct reports.

The LGW staff is a small full-time team of six who work closely with a 33-person Board of Directors. The budget is approximately $1.4 million, of which 40% is raised through contributed revenue. LGW’s administrative headquarters is in downtown DC.  The position is primarily remote, the entire team is expected to be present for in-person events and meetings within the DC region.


Fundraising Strategy

  • With LGW staff and board leadership, update fundraising strategy and set appropriate fundraising goals to assist with annual budget projections. 
  • Create actionable development plans from strategic plan set by the Board of Directors. Help set metrics and monitor and report regularly on the progress of the development plan.
  • Liaise with the Development Committee and work with CEO to set and monitor board members’ annual giving commitments and overall engagement with fundraising.
  • Assess donor relationships and create plans to increase number of donors and gift size.
  • Conduct prospect research for potential foundation support. Cultivate relationships and develop applications for foundations, donor-advised funds, and grantmaking entities.

Donor Relations

  • Research prospective donors and develop materials to prepare LGW’s President & CEO and Board for solicitations.
  • Working with the Communications Manager, develop and implement creative appeals and campaigns that engage LGW members, corporate sponsors, and other major donors.
  • Support stewardship efforts of the President & CEO and Board. Grow personal portfolio of donor relationships over time.
  • With Director of Membership, plan and implement strategy to renew current members and re-engage lapsed members.  
  • Support development, distribution, and analysis of annual membership survey and provide recommendations to increase members’ donations.
  • Conduct prospect research and work with the CEO to cultivate and engage qualified members to become major donors.

Development Operations 

  • Create and maintain development calendar to ensure a coordinated and timely approach to all communications, solicitation, and stewardship activities.
  • Collaborate with the Communications Manager on all development-related marketing and communications, including identifying opportunities for donor-centric messaging in both programs and digital tools. Coordinate and prepare donor mailings.
  • Maintain CRM (EveryAction) to ensure the integrity of donor information, analyze pertinent data, and process appropriate gift acknowledgments.

Special Events

  • With Development Committee, create compelling sponsorship benefits and packages. Identify potential sponsors and make solicitations in coordination with LGW leadership.

Ideal Qualifications

  • Passion for LGW’s mission with an ability to inspire and persuade people to support it.
  • Proven record as a nonprofit fundraising professional. Experience growing individual giving or corporate sponsorship programs is strongly preferred.
  • Strong written communication skills. Able to draft compelling fundraising proposals, pitch documents, and presentations.
  • Experience with prospect research and developing strategies and plans from findings.
  • Highly organized and able to multitask, prioritize and make efficient decisions.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and good sense of humor. Appreciates the value of working in a small team environment.
  • Self-motivated, driven, and ability to operate with significant autonomy. 
  • Positive and outgoing personality. Comfortable engaging and soliciting senior executives and high-net worth individuals.
  • Experience liaising with a Board of Directors in a fundraising setting.
  • Strong ties to local prospective donors and sponsors is a benefit.
  • Technology-oriented with CRM experience 
  • Experience with a membership-based organization is a plus.
