Color Of Change is hiring a full-time Field Manager for our Criminal Justice Organizing team. The Field Manager’s main role is to engage Color Of Change members online and offline to develop their leadership and win racial justice and electoral campaigns. They report to the Co-Director of Organizing for the Criminal Justice Department and maintain a strong relationship with the cross-departmental COC Field Team. The right candidate will be committed to getting results in a fast-paced, rapid response environment, can quickly adjust to unexpected changes and handle competing priorities. This position is ideal for experienced campaigners who are flexible, highly organized, and detail-oriented with a strong interest in leveraging field and digital civic engagement tactics to obtain racial justice.
Job responsibilities are as follows:
- Develop the leadership of COC volunteers, as well as partners and member OrganizeFor petition starters through interactive, strategic online and offline organizing actions, including -
- Organize offline field engagement tactics, including trainings and coaching sessions, as a model and recruitment tool for developing volunteer leaders.
- Manage and coordinating all field actions in your assigned issue and/or region (e.g. house parties, webinar signups and volunteer 1:1s) and providing regular updates to the Criminal Justice Organizing team.
- Develop systems to maintain timely communication and keep volunteers engaged.
- Draft messaging and narrative resources, such as scripts, toolkits, and emails, to execute effective distributed organizing efforts with volunteers across the country. Tracking and analyzing data to measure leadership development and organizing impact using CRM systems such as VAN, ActionKit, etc.
- Provide operational and logistical support and manages media outreach for actions, meetings, and events; and host debrief sessions with members, volunteers, partners and other stakeholders to promote ongoing learning for Color Of Change staff and ongoing improvement of our overall program.
- Collaborate with Campaign Managers and petition starters to co-develop campaign strategy using offline and online tactics; pitch campaigns; and write talking points, statements, and op-eds when needed.
- Participate actively on the Criminal Justice Department team, Campaigns Team, and COC-wide Team to share responsibility in developing an inclusive, learning-based culture to run campaigns that make real-world change in the lives of Black people.
In this role and organization, people-skills and writing ability are paramount. While experience in a similar role in the civil rights sector is not required, a commitment to civil rights and racial justice organizing is. You should have:
● Interest in developing the leadership of others. The ability to model courageous leadership in the face of challenge and help other people see their own power to do the same. Interested in learning and practicing organizing skills in action and growing alongside the people you organize.
● Effective verbal communication skills. The ability to clearly communicate with the staff, members, and volunteer leaders you are supporting and others in the organization is paramount; especially in rapid response moments, you’ll need to be clear and ask for clarity in return.
● Top-notch organization skills. If the books on your bookshelf are in alphabetical order, your notes utilize colors with specific meanings, and you find long to-do lists energizing, we want to talk to you! There’s a lot to keep track of in this role, and nothing can fall through the cracks. Creating personal and team tracking systems and meeting deadlines are key.
● A sense of ownership. A successful candidate will be responsive but also proactive. You take initiative and you're able to work calmly and intentionally under pressure.
● Strong writing skills. The ability to communicate information clearly in writing (e.g. through email and other digital formats) is fundamental to this role. You will be asked to draft documents, edit others, and communicate with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
● A coherent racial justice analysis.
● A commitment to confidentiality. In this role, you’ll have a window into movement and organizational politics at the highest level – confidentiality is key.
● Ability to be a strong team leader and player. Can drive a team to action, as well as co-lead on teams as a player depending on what the organizing and/or training situation calls for. Enjoys working with groups of people to create shared purpose and build structures to do something about injustice. Willing to jump into the role(s) most necessary to get the job done together.
