Description

The Education Manager is a crucial role in our team - responsible for the development of La Choza Chula’s educational library programme, managing and training our librarians and education volunteers, helping to shape the vocational curriculum of the secondary school as well as the English programme, manage education monitor and evaluation documents and developing and maintaining partnerships with new and existing organisations. We are looking for an energetic, experienced professional who is fluent in Spanish and English and who is excited about working in a unique, rural environment off the beaten path. The Education Manager is accountable to the Executive Director and manages a team of two librarians, one mobile librarian, up to two English teachers and/or English interns and an educational resource volunteer.


Main responsibilities


  • Manage the librarians and education volunteers - ensuring the library, lending scheme, library systems and activities are in good working order and relevant to the development of reading and writing skills of children in El Paredón
  • Train the local librarians, teachers and education volunteers in planning activities and events, IT skills, methodological concepts, etc.
  • Devise special activities during afternoon workshops & summer holiday programme
  • Implement a dedicated after-school catch up class for those struggling to pass first grade
  • Promote reading via special activities for target groups e.g. mobile library scheme
  • Plan and run community education activities with volunteer groups eg. approximately 5 times a year.
  • Work with the Director to source donations and funding for the library and its programmes within and outside Guatemala
  • Responsible for monitoring and evaluation of all education programmes
  • Responsible for education budget and payment of librarians and supplementary staff
  • Manage English teacher/intern and help them to develop our English teaching programme
  • Organise and implement education events such as library anniversary, international literacy days, environmental educational awareness months (including limpiatónes), librarian training activities, Teachers2Teachers conferences and workshops
  • Work with the Director of the secondary school to establish a vocational programme in to maximise impact and development of existing La Choza Chula projects e.g. computer laboratory, organic garden
  • Work closely with the LCC Director and Operations Manager to achieve organisational goals and objectives
  • Manage and develop La Choza Chula educational partnerships within and outside Guatemala. Partnerships include Guatemalan Ministry of Education, NUFED, Teachers2Teachers, IMAP and more
  • Represent La Choza Chula at meetings and community events as the educational lead for the organisation

Essential


  • Fluency in spoken and written Spanish and English
  • Teaching or Educational Management qualification
  • Experience working with children and young people in an educational setting
  • Strong sense of initiative and the ability to work independently
  • Experience managing and developing a team of staff and/or volunteers
  • Creative, resourceful and determined to achieve organisational goals and improve literacy levels amongst primary school children
  • Experience of living in a developing country or ability to adapt to challenging working and living conditions
  • Good negotiation skills
  • Experience of working with people of different backgrounds, nationalities and ages
  • Have high levels of integrity and sound judgement
  • Be a strong and flexible team player
  • The ability to deal with conflict and overcome challenges
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and organise a heavy workload
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; both written and verbal
