CharityWatch—founded in 1992 as the American Institute of Philanthropy (AIP)—is America's most independent, assertive charity watchdog and rating organization. Our mission is to maximize the effectiveness of every dollar contributed to charity by providing donors with the information they need to make more informed giving decisions.

We accomplish our mission by researching and evaluating the efficiency, accountability, and governance of nonprofit organizations; educating the public about the importance of wise giving; informing the public of wasteful or unethical practices of nonprofits; providing recognition to highly effective and ethical charities; conducting special investigations and evaluations of nonprofit organizations; partnering with investigative journalists to expose wrongdoing in the nonprofit sector; and expanding and redefining our programs periodically to meet the continuing challenge of keeping the donating public informed.

What We Are Seeking

CharityWatch is seeking a self-motivated junior financial analyst / accounting assistant to add to our team. The ideal candidate is someone with a positive attitude and excellent critical thinking skills who enjoys working collaboratively and flexibly to meet evolving organizational priorities in a small office environment. You should possess a sense of curiosity and interest in CharityWatch's work, take ownership of the tasks assigned to you, and be invested in CharityWatch's mission by demonstrating a willingness to continuously learn more and take on additional responsibilities as we develop your role within the organization. Good writing and communication skills are also essential for this position.

This role requires an understanding of how transactions flow through financial statements, a basic familiarity with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and excellent critical thinking skills. Charity financial reporting lacks significant standardization. The ideal candidate for this position must possess a sense of curiosity that inspires you to not simply question "how" to perform the financial analysis, but "why" you need to analyze the presented data in a particular way in order to derive useful information so that you can apply this knowledge more broadly in your work. Attention to detail and commitment to follow through are absolutely critical for this role.

Candidates applying for this role will be asked to demonstrate their capability for the junior analyst / accounting assistant position through a combination of education and work experience. Only candidates with a strong, demonstrated foundational understanding of financial statements and basic accounting concepts will be considered.

Minimum Requirements

Candidates should possess a 4 year degree in accounting, finance, or a related field and at least 3 years of relevant work experience; or a demonstrated capability for this role through a combination of education and at least 5 years of relevant work experience.

Start Date & Hours

Our target date for filling this role is July/August 2021. We will consider applications on a rolling basis until the position is filled. However, start date is negotiable. Employees are asked to maintain a consistent schedule unless cleared with the executive director in advance. However, we are open to a Monday through Friday schedule of 9am to 5pm; 10am to 6pm; or 11am to 7pm, based on the candidate’s desired working hours. This schedule may be adjusted (with advance notice) on rare occasions to cover for other staff members or to meet organizational goals.

CharityWatch ideally seeks a full-time (40 hours per week) candidate for this position. However, we are open to considering part-time status for this hourly position (at a minimum of 32 hours per week) for highly qualified candidates.

Responsibilities

Please note that this job description is not a comprehensive listing of all duties for this position. Responsibilities will evolve based on the needs and priorities of the organization and capabilities of the candidate.

 Environment

CharityWatch offices are located in The Green Exchange building in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago. We foster an environment of open communication and mutual respect, and maintain a collaborative working style in which input from all staff members is valued and considered.
