Vera’s Center on Immigration and Justice (CIJ) works with government, nonprofit partners, and communities to improve government systems that affect immigrants and their families. The center administers several nationwide legal services programs for immigrants facing deportation, develops and implements pilot programs, provides technical assistance, and conducts independent research and evaluation. CIJ researchers also support the Center’s programmatic efforts and perform regular analysis of federal government and subcontractor data.
Vera seeks a Research Analyst to work on data management and analysis across various projects with its Center on Immigration and Justice (CIJ). CIJ manages several proprietary databases that run on Caspio and AWS and uses SQL to manage data. The position requires a real enthusiasm for working with data and a strong grasp of quantitative analysis and either programming language, database development, or data management. This is an opportunity to help shape an innovative national research and policy agenda as part of a dedicated team of experts working to improve access to justice for noncitizens.
This is a full-time position based in New York City.
The Research Analyst will work in close collaboration with staff across CIJ’s programs to manage data and perform quantitative data analysis for the Center’s ongoing projects to improve access to fairness and justice for immigrants in the United States. In particular, the analyst will be responsible for:
- Managing datasets collected through cloud-based proprietary databases, including “backend” database tasks;
- Coordinating database management tasks such as participating in new database development, communicating with outside engineers, developing codebooks; and delivering user trainings through webinars and database guides;
- Preparing data for analysis, including cleaning, recoding, and merging data;
- Conducting quantitative analysis, including writing new queries and modifying existing syntax;
- Assisting in preparing data for and verifying results within reports and other written materials for audiences including government partners, funders, and the public;
- Assisting on other projects and tasks as assigned.
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
- Bachelor’s degree in statistics, computer science, mathematics, economics, social science, or related discipline, and some relevant work experience; or a Master’s degree in a related discipline;
- A real enthusiasm for working with data is essential to this position;
- Demonstrated experience in data preparation and analysis (including writing queries) using programming-based applications such as SQL, Stata, R, or Python. Experience with statistical analysis, strong skills in programming, and some exposure to relational databases is strongly preferred;
- Excellence in quantitative reasoning and the ability to detect anomalies in data;
- Experience with database management or development is preferred;
- Ability to work on multiple projects effectively and efficiently, both independently and collaboratively;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, attention to detail, and team-based approach to problem-solving;
- A commitment to a collegial, collaborative, and diverse workplace;
- Familiarity with or demonstrated interest in issues affecting immigrants in the United States. Applicants with personal immigration system experiences are especially encouraged to apply, as are Spanish speakers.
This position may involve working with secure data that requires government security clearance. An additional clearance requirement is residence in the United States for at least three of the last five years.
