GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:

IRCO Immigration Legal Services (IRCO ILS) seeks to hire a full-time Immigration Attorney to be an integral part of our team.  The attorney will work on affirmative application-based immigration matters to USCIS. IRCO ILS envisions a safe, welcoming, and inclusive Oregon for immigrants and refugees. Our work is focused on creating more access to direct, application-based and defensive immigration legal services that provides more security and stability to our most vulnerable community members. In addition, IRCO ILS provides community outreach and education (Know Your Rights). Please note: Applicants must live in the greater Portland metro area or have immediate plans to relocate to this area. No relocation package is included.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

·        Daily communications, correspondence, and meetings with clients, staff, and USCIS

·        Affirmative Immigration Attorney duties include: Preparing and filing various affirmative immigration forms, including but not limited to Adjustment of Status, Employment Authorization, Citizenship, VAWA, U, & T visas

·        Removal Defense Immigration Attorney duties include: Research, prepare, and represent clients facing removal in the Portland Immigration Court; some work on affirmative immigration cases is encouraged.

·        Participate in legal clinics, know your rights presentations, and other community education and engagement events.

·        Providing support to internal IRCO programs including RIFS (Refugee Immigrant Family Strengthening) and SAE (Services Against Exploitation)

·        Preparing and leading community education with IRCO staff and the community at large

·        Collaboration with various partner agencies

·        Regular weekly visits to the office and post office

·        Assist with projects and other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

·        Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited law school

·        Licensure with the Oregon State Bar or another state bar preferred (JD advantaged candidates in the state of Oregon with a strong commitment to immigrant communities are encouraged to apply)

·        Experience in immigration law experience (Preferred)

·        Experience working with immigrant and refugee communities

·        Fluency in another language other than English (Preferred)

·        Proficient in Microsoft Office and online legal research

·        Must be able to pass criminal history background check 

·        Strong attention to detail

·        Ability to work in a fast-paced environment; self-starting with a flexible growth mindset is a must!

KNOWLEDGE:

Education: Law Degree (5)

Experience: Less than one year of experience is required (2)

Licensure, Certification:  Juris Doctorate

Computers: All positions at IRCO require use of a computer and experience working with Microsoft Products including but not limited to Microsoft 365, Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint.

Work Independence:

Positions perform routine work with regular supervision and generally are given instructions or written procedures. Positions occasionally encounter variation and are encouraged to suggest ways to respond, but can't take final action without approval (2)

Planning:

Positions at this level must consider own work and work of others. Planning processes will include determination of issues or obstacles and preferred courses of action. Ability to forecast for the near future (six to twelve months) is required (3)

Supervision:

Positions at this level are not responsible for any supervisory functions or responsibilities, but may occasionally be asked to orient and/or train new employees or volunteers. (1)

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Environment:

Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment and meet tight deadlines. Ability to also work with people experiencing trauma, conflict, and poverty.

Schedule:

The work schedule is mostly stable and does not fluctuate without prior notice. (2)
