POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Margaret Fuller House seeks an experienced Community Outreach Worker for Cambridge

(specifically, the Port neighborhood). Under the direction of the Director of Programs, the

outreach worker will be a link to young adults and older individuals ages ranging from 18 to

adulthood not associated or connected with services and opportunities in the community. The

primary focus will be individuals from 18 to 35 years of age.

The Community Outreach Worker will work closely with the Community Liaison to develop

relationships and referral sources with community partners and providers that meet the needs of

the target population. The Community Outreach worker will develop and maintain relationships

with City/State based services, employment opportunities and programs to support outreach

efforts and needs of clients.

REPORTING STRUCTURE:

The Community Outreach Worker is a part of the Community Advancement Program who will

report directly to the Director of Programs. The Community Outreach Worker will work closely

with the Community Liaison and other staff as needed.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

● Develop relationships with at-risk young adults and older age ranging from 18 to 35 year

of age that are or have been involved with the court system, gang affiliated, experiencing

homelessness that create positive change in their life

● Assess for needs and skills and provide appropriate referrals and resources to assist with

GED, job training/readiness, substance abuse, mental health, financial assistance, and

housing advocacy.

● Provide additional services such as training & workshops, resume writing, job coaching

and interview skills.

● Manage on-going caseload with targeted population throughout their contact with

community services until they are self-sufficient.

● Conduct follow-ups and continue to support clients after referrals have been made

● Maintain case management records and comprehensive statistics

● Develop weekly, monthly and quarterly reports


QUALIFICATIONS:

● High School diploma

● At least 1 year experience working as an Outreach worker or equivalent

● Ability to relate and communicate effectively with youth and young adults

● Ability to access and knowledge of community resources

● Extensive knowledge of Cambridge (especially the “Port” and other housing

developments in Cambridge)

● Good computer skills and excellent organization skills

● Sensitivity to issues related to racial and cultural diversity, sexual orientation, and gender

● Ability to work autonomously, be self directed and collaborate as a team member

● Ability to demonstrate and understand professional boundaries

● Ability to work evening and weekends as needed


ABOUT THE MARGARET FULLER NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSE: The Margaret Fuller

Neighborhood House (MFNH) was founded in 1902 as a settlement house to provide services

to help immigrants assimilate into American culture. The settlement movement was a reformist

social movement that began in the 1880s in England and the United States with the goal of

getting the rich and poor to live more closely together in an interdependent community. Located

in the historic birthplace and residence of celebrated feminist, author, and transcendentalist,

Margaret Fuller, the house has stood as a beacon of hope and acceptance for thousands of

Cambridge and Greater Boston’s most vulnerable residents for more than 100 years. For more

than a century, the House has worked with generations of families in The Port, one of the most

diverse communities in Cambridge. Today, the MFNH serves as a critical resource for more

than 8,000 people a year.
