The Team

We are a community of advocates committed to ending mass incarceration and advancing racial and economic justice. Our organization consists of a central support team in Los Angeles, CA and a network of client advocates or “Bail Disruptors” who work in their local communities to provide bail assistance and advance reform. 

 

Description

The Research Attorney will be a part of our Legal and Policy Department and will report to the Supervising Attorney and/or the National Director of Legal and Policy as directed. The Research Attorney will play an important role in advancing reform efforts related to The Bail Project’s mission to eliminate cash bail and secure pretrial reform. Assisting other team members, the Research Attorney will develop a deep and current knowledge of the efficacy of existing bail policies and practices in targeted jurisdictions. The ideal candidate will have excellent research and writing skills and a commitment to criminal justice reform.

Responsibilities:

  • Support local sites and the central support team with legal research and advice to address operational issues and maximize bailout capacity
  • Research state and local law, court rules, administrative regulations, attorney general opinions, practices, and licensing and insurance requirements related to bail in potential bail fund sites.
  • Research and advise the organization on forfeiture process and obligations
  • Collaborate with local counsel to evaluate and determine strategy for challenging bail forfeitures 
  • Conduct factual investigation and legal analysis of the viability of posting percentage and surety bonds in various jurisdictions
  • Work closely with the General Counsel's office to identify issues that warrant review
  • Help defend against insurance challenges 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school in the United States
  • Minimum of 2-5 years of relevant legal experience that includes demonstrated experience with rigorous legal research and reading and analyzing state statutes and court rules; some preference for experience working with city, county or state policymakers 
  • Familiarity with the pre-trial process and criminal court case processes
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills and ability to communicate well to a variety of stakeholders, and the capacity to articulate legal concepts and complex policy issues to a variety of audiences
  • Strategic thinker with an ability to anticipate challenges and address roadblocks as they arise
  • Ability to meet quick deadlines, work with efficiency, and execute multiple tasks while responding to different priorities
  • Applicants must be willing to work in a collaborative, entrepreneurial, team-based environment and possess an innovative spirit, sense of humor, and willingness to adapt to the change inherent in a growing organization
