Tenant Union Representative Network (TURN) seeks a housing attorney to join the Tenant Rights Unit. TURN is a nonprofit organization working to address the racial and economic inequities in housing across Philadelphia. TURN is looking for an attorney committed to advocacy on behalf of low-income marginalized people. While the duties and responsibilities may shift over time, the mission to ensure that all Philadelphians have access to safe, decent, and affordable housing will always remain the same.

The duties include but are not limited to representing tenants in affirmative litigation and defensive cases; working closely with organizers; writing and delivering community education workshops; providing individual consultations; and advocating for policy change.

This is a grant-funded one-year position, with the possibility of extending the contract if additional funds are awarded. All TURN employees are working remotely until further notice. This position may also require the attorney to visit some clients at their homes or elsewhere, with COVID safety guidelines carefully followed.

Experience and Qualifications

Preferred:

  • One to three years of relevant legal, outreach, or community organizing experience. Advocates with significant interest in housing law and other relevant experience are encouraged to apply. Recent law school graduates with significant clinical/internship practice experience, or relevant experience from before law school, are also encouraged to apply.
  • Familiarity with the tenants’ rights and legal services landscapes in Philadelphia.
  • Familiarity, including personal and family experience, with Philadelphia neighborhoods and their patterns of changing demographics and gentrification.
  • Substantive and procedural knowledge in housing law and policy, including landlord-tenant law, eviction defense, housing discrimination, gentrification, and/or public and subsidized housing. Other relevant experience working with low-income communities, especially in Philadelphia, will also be considered.
  • Proficiency in a language other than English, especially Spanish.

Required:

  • Motivation and commitment to fighting systemic housing injustice.
  • J. D. and license to practice law in Pennsylvania, eligibility to waive in, or willingness to take the PA bar at the first opportunity.
  • The ability to think creatively about solving problems; strong interpersonal skills; experience collaborating with diverse groups of people; effective written and oral communication skills with a variety of audiences; the ability to learn and use complex information quickly; comfort working remotely with and without supervision.
